Prophetic Training I: Overview

Prophetic Training by Joshua Shaw

  • Overview of Prophetic Ministry
What is prophetic ministry?
  • Prophetic ministry is any ministry that requires eyes to see and/or ears to hear what the Spirit is doing and wants to do. Prophetic ministry is ministry is led by receiving from the Lord and acting upon it. It is receiving from the heaven and acting and releasing it on earth. In This definition I include words of Knowledge, word of wisdom Prophecy, Visions, Dreams, trances, Impressions, Angelic visitation, internal voice of the Spirit, etc. to all be a part of prophetic ministry.
What is the purpose of prophetic ministry?
  • The purpose of prophetic ministry is to pull out the gold that is hidden under the dirt. It’s pulling out the greatness that God built in people. Everyone is created in God’s image, but through the fall that image was distorted. Prophetic ministry helps us look beyond the fallen state and see the image He created them to be.
  • Prophecy helps us know what’s deep in people’s hearts. When a nonbeliever comes around the prophetic, their hearts are exposed and they are convinced God is truly among us.

1 Corinthians 14:24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. 25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

  • Prophecy brings edification, exhortation, and comfort to men. If prophecy doesn’t serve the purpose of edification, exhortation, and comfort, it’s not from the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14: 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men

  • Prophetic ministry will commission believers into their callings. Through prophetic ministry, Holy Spirit can commission workers after His heart.

Acts 13:13 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

  • Prophetic Ministry reveals purpose and destiny.

Acts 9:13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

  • Prophetic ministry helps the Church to see and hear where and how the Spirit is moving and the direction He is taking the Church. Similar to how the sons if Issachar had understanding of the times, through the gift of prophecy, the Church gains understanding of how the Spirit is moving. This is seen throughout scripture and Church history.

1 Chronicles 12: ; 32 of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command;

  • Prophecy plays a huge role in imparting gifts. Timothy received a gift through the laying on of hands. Throughout the book of acts the baptism of the Spirit was given through the laying on of hands also.

1 Timothy 4:4 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.

  • Prophecy can warn of upcoming dangers and prepare the Church to counter the damage. For example, Agabus knew about a great famine and they were able to send aid through the apostles years before the famine struck. He also knew Paul would be bound by the Romans in Jerusalem.

Acts 11:28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Acts 21:11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

  • Prophetic ministry can give direction of where to go. We see the Spirit communicating with believers throughout the book of Acts on where to go such Peter going to the gentiles, or Paul’s Macedonia call.

Acts 10”19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you. 20 Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”

Acts 16:9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

  • Prophecy always testifies of Jesus. The testimony of Jesus is a prophetic declaration of who the One True God is. Prophecy must always testify of Jesus.
Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

What is the gift of prophecy and how is it different from word of knowledge?
  • Prophecy is a tool to hear what the Spirit is saying. It tunes you into the voice and impressions of the Spirit. It is hearing from the Spirit and communicating what He is saying.
  • Prophecy is foretelling which is seeing things about their future and forth telling – which is where the words you speak carry the grace to cause them to happen. For example, a lot of times when I’m praying over someone the Lord will show me what He’s doing in someone’s life and where He is going to take them in their walk. Forth telling prophecy is very similar to impartation, which we’ll discuss later but carries the same principle as grace to cause a change.

Foretelling prophecy –

Matthew 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

Acts 21:11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

Forth telling prophecy –

Matthew 21:18 Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away.

King Joash came to Elisha-

2 King 13:18 Then he said, “Take the arrows”; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground”; so he struck three times, and stopped. 19 And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times.”

  • Word of Knowledge is a prophetic gift where you know a fact about the person’s present or past. For example one time I was witnessing to a girl, and I just knew for some reason when she was younger she was abused by a person of the faith and that caused her to turn away from Jesus. After asking her about it, she said she was molested by a priest when she was 7 and hated the church ever since. After that, she gave her life to the Lord.
Word of Knowledge –

John 5:16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

What are prophets?
  • A prophet is a gift to the Church. The prophet’s role is to equip the saints for work of service. Simply to guide the Church into the Spirit. A prophet will equip believers with eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying.
  • They play a big part in discerning the motives and fruit of actions and operations, bringing out identity and callings in people’s lives, and imparting the gifts needed for the work of service.
  • The role of a prophet is not something you ask for but the Lord commissions you to. Many are born with these callings, or born again with these callings.

Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

What are the different levels of prophecy?

  • There are different measures of prophecy. Here are five different levels to help you gain an understanding. You can break it down more or less.
Level 1: Every believer can prophesy. Every believer can receive basic impressions or revelations from the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

Level 2: In a prophetic community that is saturated in God’s presence there is an anointing in the atmosphere that intensifies prophetic accuracy. In this atmosphere, believers who rarely receive anything from the Spirit will receive more with greater clarity.

Level 3: Those with the gift of prophecy will have an increase in receiving words, impressions, visions, dreams, trances, etc. from the Holy Spirit.

Level 4: At this level are prophetic people who have reached a maturity in the gift of prophecy and have a greater influence in their congregations. These believers operate in a high level of prophecy on a regular basis but are not prophets.

Level 5: Prophets are at the highest level of prophetic ministry. The gift of prophecy is the primary gift that helps prophets function in their calling.

How is New Testament Prophecy/prophets different from Old Testament Prophecy/prophets?
  • In the Old Covenant, prophets would receive the direct word of God, “Thus says the Lord,” and were trusted to speak only the words He spoke.
  • They often would pronounce God’s judgment and wrath upon disobedience and violently fight for righteousness and holiness with passionate zeal and hatred for evil.

1 Kings 18:38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”

40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there.

  • In the old covenant, the Word of the Lord often negated the individuals will.

2 Samuel 19:20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?”

And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

Jeremiah 20:9Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,

Nor speak anymore in His name.”

But His word was in my heart like a burning fire

Shut up in my bones;

I was weary of holding it back,

And I could not.

  • In the Old Covenant, You judge the prophet by if what he said comes true. The penalty for a failed prophecy is death. They weren’t yet born of the spirit making them incapable to judge what is from the Spirit.

Deuteronomy 18:20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

  • In the New Covenant, we perceive what the Lord is saying and communicate it with our own words. When we speak a word over someone, it’s not the Word of God, but what we perceive the Holy Spirit is saying. We are sons and daughters of God, and so God likes to use us in our individual uniqueness as a part of communicating His heart to His people.
  • In the new covenant, we are under the ministry of reconciliation. So we pronounce reconciliation to the Father instead of judgment. We have been commissioned to restore those who are blinded by darkness instead of condemn and judge them. Also, all judgment was handed over to Jesus, and Jesus said I judge no one until the day.

2 Corinthians 5:18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

John 5:22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

John 12:47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

  • In the New Covenant, The spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet. That means that because we have the option to prophecy or to stay silent our will is not negated.

1 Corinthians 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

  • In the New Covenant, You judge the prophecy and not the prophet. Because we perceive what the Lord is saying rather than receiving His direct words, the prophecies spoken must be judged and because we now have the Holy Spirit living with us, joined with our spirits, we can properly discern what is from the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn 8and all may be encouraged.

  • So what would Elijah look like under the New Covenant?
  • He would restore the hearts of the children to their Father.

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet

Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

6 And he will turn

The hearts of the fathers to the children,

And the hearts of the children to their fathers,

Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

I’m finding many believers think of prophets and prophetic ministry under the Old Covenant and try to apply that to the new. We are under a new covenant and a new order for the role of prophets and prophetic ministry.

Activation

  • Ask the Father for ears to hear what the Spirit is saying and eyes to see what the Spirit is doing. Ask for an increase in sensitivity His presence and a deeper intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
Heavenly Father, praise You and thank You. You are amazing, thank You for Your love. Open my ears to hear what You are speaking Lord, open my eyes to see what You are doing. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, help me to be sensitive to Him. I ask for a deeper intimacy with the Holy Spirit in Jesus name amen.
  • Our Father has hidden gold in everyone. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind someone in the room and reveal something about the gold He hid in them and tell the person.

If you are reading this and not around people, ask the Lord to reveal the gold in someone you come in contact with as you go about your day.
