Weightlifting has recently become a very strong, healthy passion for me (no coincidence it began as soon as I began living for Christ), and that has allowed me to view God's assistance in my life from a different perspective in relation to this interest of mine.
Picture the role a gym partner/assistant or coach during your workout session as an analogy comparing the role of God’s work in your life during difficult trials. He will encourage you to continue pushing through each painful repetition and set as you strive to accomplish the best workout session. When the repetitions in a set become too difficult for you to lift on your own, the spotter steps in to assist by steadying and lightening the load in order that you may complete even more repetitions (aka, “assisted reps”) in which you are otherwise incapable of accomplishing on your own strength . Notice how He does NOT necessarily take the full load of the weight off, as He is relying on you to put forth your maximum effort to produce the best results. Only during times of much needed assistance, say for example if you are in danger as the weight is too much to bear, will He remove the unmanageable weight entirely. He will teach you by providing tips on improving your form and finding the right amount of weight to work with so that you do not hurt yourself or cheat yourself by bringing into play unwanted muscles to compensate for poor form or too heavy of weight.
The promise of the assistant during the workout is similar to that of God’s promise for our lives, in that He will stand by our side the entire time, motivating, aiding and protecting against life's burdensome loads that place stress on our bodies and minds. Do not throw away your greatest supporter in exchange for something that cannot provide the indispensable help that only our Creator can. Learn to develop that Trust with God, and you will live a life worry-free because you have the assurance that the One who made you and the world around you is on your side to help you.
When your grip on the bar is slipping, the weight pinning you down as you struggle with every ounce of strength you can conjure, all you have to do is ask Him when you need help. He is right there hovered over you, practically breathing down your neck, watching you go through the motions. He is never far and constantly keeping watch over you through everything, ready to intervene at any moment to be of service.

"Nothing can stop Christ's constant presence with us. God tells us how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in Him. If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we will not be afraid." Commentary from NIV "Life Application Study Bible" Tyndale House Publishers.
