You know how thinking something will make you better will cause your subconscious mind to actually make you physically better, the placebo effect? It can actually work in reverse, if you think something will harm you your mind can make you physically ill. While a bit extreme, I've never gotten physically ill looking or thinking about Christianity, I think this is what is happening to these atheists compounded with group reinforcement.
As to the story I agree with the judge, the cross is part of our history and should remain in the museum to tell that story. It's not like the government used resources to make a cross and put it on display, the cross was forged in the debris without any human intervention and it is a part of 9/11 history. So if lots of people were touched or found solace in this cross, I have no problem taking it along with other 9/11 artifacts to a museum to be on display.
