Many have expressed dismay at the current state of denominational churches. Some accuse them of being worldly minded, of adopting a policy of appeasement with an increasingly debauched culture. Others simply believe they're becoming too thin and lax. The memory of the Laodicean church is often used as a template to describe the current state of affairs.
Non-denominational churches are not far behind. The advent of satellite TV ministries in the 1980's and subsequent development of the mega church has led to accusations of greed, corruption and self-serving personalities. Heresy is rampant and Biblical and theological illiteracy is common. None wish to study the word or where our traditions come from, however right or wrong they may be.
The power of religion has been forgotten. The church is too worldly minded. It has become so corrupt that organizations like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, aggressive atheism, and the religion of Islam have no credible arguments or actions from the church to oppose them. Instead of being a light to the world, Christians now echo the phrase 'God is able to handle the problem' and use that as a excuse to literally do nothing - denying the words of the book of James that faith without works is dead.
Some have left both and are not associated with any church at all. Yet the desire and Biblical command to gather for worship remains. What is one to do?
A growing trend is to return to the custom of the first century church and to meet in small home groups. But where do you find such a group? Registries on the internet have sprung up and if one wishes to learn of a place nearby to gather for unconventional twenty-first/first century style worship they check it out.
One such national registry is House Church Central
Enter a city and state or just your zip code and home churches near you will be listed - if they exist.
Of course there's the problem of a lack of accountability. In the first century, the apostles provided the guidance necessary to keep churches from wayward doctrine. None such exists today. The movement is too new.
This information is provided for the reader's information and consideration. If anyone knows of other registries or methods of contacting a home worship group I invite them to enter links here. If anyone knows of a method to review doctrines so that a form of Biblical standard is maintained, I invite them to enter it here.
Lastly, I'm placing this thread in the Controversial section. It may not be a red hot topic such as who killed JFK, but it's important to consider I think. If the reader holds firmly to the belief that only denominational churches have the answer, then we've got our argument firmly in hand.
and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...
