Is the Bible scientifically accurate? What do you think?

(Split from this thread: On Interpretation of Scripture )

Here's some examples...

Fourth internal evidence that the Bible is God’s Word because of it’s scientific accuracy. In Job we’re told God “hangs the earth on nothing” (Job 26:7).  The author of Job could only have known that the Earth hung in space by God’s revelation of said fact… Particularly before the invention of astronomy and space travel. It was revealed to Isaiah even that the earth was of circular shape as Isaiah declared “It is he who sits above the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22).

The Bible is not scientific in that the Bible is pre-science.  A person cannot hold the Bible to being "scientifically accurate" in terms of how we define science today because that standard of scientific precision didn't exist when the Bible was written.

The Bible will use phenomenologial lanaguage that we understand to be just that.  When the Bible refers to the mountains melting like wax at the presence of the Lord, the point is that the presence of God diminishes everything.  It doesn't mean that people in Bible times thought that can mountains melt.  It is an expression and a figurative one at that.   I think much of what the Bible says that is taken as "unscientific" fit into the figurative expression category.

It also needs to be observed that the attempt to show the Bible as "unscientific" is an attempt at destroying the notion that the Bible is inerrant. If the Bible can be shown to be making a scientific claim that is clearly false, then it speaks to the issue of the Bible's inerrant nature.

In addition, it should be pointed out that the Bible makes no "scientfic" claims. To hold the Bible, which is not a book of science and makes no scientific claims  to a modern scientific standard simply isn't fair to the writers or to the text of Scripture.

Hear hear ! The Bible is God's post cards to humans concerning His relationship to us I think.

Good points. I think I'll just close this one down.
