Powerful Asteroids Strike Earth with Surprising Frequency

By Megan Gannon, News Editor   |   April 22, 2014 10:53am ET

Since the start of the 21st century, dozens of incoming asteroids have slammed into Earth, some of them packing far more energy than a city-destroying atomic bomb, a new animation illustrates.

The video is based on new data from a network of sensors around the globe that is designed to detect nuclear detonations and is operated by the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization. Between 2000 and 2013, these instruments detected 26 explosions on the planet ranging in energy from 1 to 600 kilotons, all caused by asteroid impacts, B612 Foundation officials said. For comparison, the nuclear bomb that flattened Hiroshima in 1945 burst with the energy of 15 kilotons. [Watch the animation of Earth's asteroid impacts]

Many of these asteroid collisions go unnoticed because they explode too high up in the atmosphere to cause damage on the ground. What's more, these impacts often occur above remote parts of the ocean.....

Are they asteroids or meteors?

If you want to see the damage it can cause, google barringer crater. It smacked into the arizona desert when there were people around,

I am thinking our world will experience some of the very destructive variety during the tribulation. And not the kind that explode in the atmosphere.

Good point! For some strange reason, the name changes as it goes from outer space and into Earth's atmosphere.

Checking barringer crater....

My mistake, it happened just prior to humans being there. But you can see the crater still quite visible today. And its huge. Their website gives a description of what happened when it hit.

Not sure if their checking anything smaller than 1 kiloton. there could be even more than reported. I have seen one while driving at night about 2 and 1/2 feet in diameter. It was  round looking and had fire tail about 10 to 15 feet long it crashed in the woods. while on a merchant marine ship I spent a lot of time in the middle of the ocean and Ive seen many stars setting still and then fall and burn out.  Back to the small one i saw; if it is 2 1/2 feet diameter and on fire and hits a building with its speed there will be quiet  a bit of damage.

Perspective - these asteroids - err, meteors - burned up in the atmosphere because they were too small to survive the friction with the atmosphere.

Blessings nebula

Last night I watched a program about asteroids,it is astonishing how many have & do hit our planet & what really took me by surprise is that mostly all of them that have were not detected ahead of time....WOW!

It is God's Handi-work that most asteroids are pulled in by Jupiter or earth would have been destroyed long ago...................there Heavens most assuredly declare the Glory of God................Praise the Lord!

no   what is known as a star in science today would destroy the whole earth if we got close to it.

Wormwood is most likely either an asteroid or it is figurative speech for a powerful angel.  With the description of a huge mountain falling into the sea in other scripture I would guess it's a good sized asteroid.
