CHRIST THE CENTRE OF THE BIBLE. Foreknowing Christ.

FOREKNOWING CHRIST       (Job - Song of Sol.)

Here we come to the books of poetry and wisdom - Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastics and Song of Solomon. These books tell of the experiences of the heart. Trials and suffering are not always for our punishment but sometimes for our education and training.

Here we see there is a knowledge of Christ beforehand. Christ is foreknown in Redemption, Mediation & Salvation. He is known to be the Saviour, the Shepherd, & the Sovereign Lord.

The book of Job deals with one of the oldest problems - `Why do godly people suffer?`  The drama of job offers a solution to these problems. Job was being honoured by God. It was the truth that God could trust Job to remain faithful in spite of everything.

Job declares, `For I know that my redeemer liveth` (Job 19:25)

The book of Psalms is the best loved book of the Old Testament. Psalms means book of praises. It contains 150 poems to be set to music for worship. They magnify and praise the Lord, exalt His attributes, His names, His word, and His goodness. Every human experience is related to Him - joy, sorrow, victory and failure.

David writes, `The Lord is my shepherd.` (Ps. 23: 1)

The Proverbs are for everyday life - business, home and relaxing. We find there that godliness is practical. Every relationship is mentioned - duty to God, our neighbors, duty of parents and children, and our obligations in community.

Solomon writes, `I, wisdom,.... the Lord possessed me at the beginning..`(Prov. 8: 12 & 22)

The book of Ecclesiastes are not God`s philosophy of life but man`s. It contains the meditations  of the wise man, Solomon. However we know that he did not follow his own wisdom.

The Song of Solomon is a song of love in marriage in oriental language and imagery. The persons are Solomon and the Shulamite maid and the daughters of Jerusalem. The idea of the love of husband and wife sets forth the love between Jehovah and His people, Israel.

`His banner over me is love.` (S. of Sol. 2 :4)

Hi Marilyn

My all-time favourite Psalm is Psalm 91, but I love Ps. 22 as well.  There are many others too, but I love the idea that we are in a "secret place" with Him and that we are safe with our Shepherd.

Hi SisterActs2,

Thanks for sharing. Yes great Psalms. Apparently Ps. 91 is very popular with soldiers and we can see why -

`..you shall not be afraid of the terror by night, .....and under His wings you shall take refuge...`  (Ps. 91: 4 & 5)

I just love to read of the glory of the Lord in Ps. 24 & 45 etc.

`Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.` (Ps. 24: 10)

`Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made you glad..` (Ps. 45: 8)

And all this revelation before the Lord even was manifested on earth. And to think the Lord the King of Glory came from `ivory palaces` to this sin-stricken earth.

Yes Marilyn.  I am finding the Psalms more and more necessary to my daily reading - we find gems in every line, Praise His wonderful Name!

I love Psalm 23 The Lord is my Shepherd.  I went to a traditional girls' high school and we used to sing this song often.  I still sing it sometimes at home and some other Christian songs that I remember singing at high school 25 plus years ago.

I'm currently reading the book of Psalms (in my first read through of the Bible).  I'm up to Psalm 60.  I wish I knew what other ones are sung.

Hi mabel,

Trust you to find such gems on utube. Just went there and what a wealth of great listening. The Gaelic singing was interesting. Thanks for posting that link.

Apologies people. I meant Psalm 23, but Ps. 22 is prophetic and, as with all the Psalms and the rest of God's Word, I love it all.

Hi SisterActs2,

I wondered that. Actually Psalms 22, 23 & 24 form a great trilogy. Care to share about that, if you know?

regards, Marilyn.

Hi Marilyn

I have never made the connection, to be quite honest.  I have had a look and have come up with a possible response..... could it be all about what Jesus has done, and Who He is?  He is Saviour, Lord, King, Shepherd, suffering servant, sinless and completely righteous, provider of our lives, homes, wellbeing; our all sufficiency... just to name some of the roles He fulfils.....

Hi SisterActs2,

That and more.

Ps. 22 is about the Lord suffering on the cross. The first few words are what He cried out on the cross. And if we read more we see other similarities.

Ps. 23 is as you said our Shepherd, and His care for His people. Most loved scripture of all time I think.

Ps. 24 is about the Lord`s ascension and reception into glory. The picture of the `gates` of heaven, opening wide to let in the King of glory.

So together we see those Psalms - at the cross, caring for us and His ascension.

Quite amazing prophetic psalms.
