THE BEAR – The Soviet Union.

After World War 1, (1917) the next great Super Power arose. It devoured country after country, incorporating them into one monolithic dominion, behind the `iron curtain.` It was called, the Soviet Union. (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, the Slovac nations & all the ...stan`s)

The Soviet communists have a history of wars, confrontation and invasions. They have executed an estimate of 40 million people in their prisons and concentration camps.

In 1991, however there was an uprising in the Soviet Union and the former Soviet peoples then separated into their different countries. This change was called by the Russians `Perestroika,` meaning restructuring. Elections were held but they were not free, as each country still retains the same philosophy, (Communism) ideology and militaristic ambitions.

The Russian Republic became the dominant force in the confederacy of nations from the Slovac countries of eastern Europe to the various republics along Russia`s southern border.

Let`s now look at Daniel`s vision in Chapter 7 and assess the evidential descriptions there in relation to the contemporary world situation.

Daniel`s vision.

`And suddenly another beast, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said to it; “Arise, devour much flesh!” (Dan. 7: 5)

A Bear –

It is well documented that the bear is the national symbol of the Soviets. It was not by accident that this was the emblem chosen for the Moscow Olympics in 1979. A friendly and loveable little bear as portrayed on the poster, however the reality is quite different.

Arise, devour much flesh –

The Soviets devoured country after country into its great monolithic power block. Then with Perestroika, restructuring, it became a confederacy of nations. The prophet Ezekiel was shown this.

Frequently God gives revelation of the future through one of His prophets, then confirms or continues the prediction through another.

So we see that the prophet Ezekiel (38 & 39) enlarges our concept of a monolithic power as he contemplates a mighty confederacy of independent nations. He specifies their geographical position relative to the nation of Israel – the `uttermost or extreme parts of the North.` (Ez. 38: 6, 15 & 39: 2) There is only one super power that occupies this position – the former Soviet Union & now Russia & its confederacy of nations.

Three ribs in its mouth –

Metaphorically these `ribs` represent 3 nations who have not previously been incorporated within the Bear. These will join the big move into the Middle East, as predicted by the prophet Ezekiel. In this predicted military confederacy, Ezekiel records exactly 3 such countries.

Thus when the great bear arises, it will be brought by God to the mountains of Israel where it will be judged. Along with it will come other 3 nations – Persia, (Iran) Ethiopia and Libya. Note these three nations are allied with Russia today. (Ez. 38: 5)
