  3. I am probably guilty of taking this too literally. I have just assumed, that God, created time, the "instant" that the first stuff existed, stuff here, meaning any thing not spiritual, all things physical, energy, matter, space, AND time. I cannot think of a way to define time, that does not use something from the physical universe. Give me a unit of time, and I will show you a relationship to something physical. The Time is takes for a candle to burn out, the Time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun. The Time it takes for a camel to cross a desert, or the Time it takes for a minute hand, to make 1/60th of a rotation around the face of a clock. In Creation, THING begin, the whole physical universe. Although this makes little sense, I will say it, and you will know what I mean: "Before" God created, (there was no before, because time did not exist yet), God lived in eternity. So, rather than 'before', let me say it this way: "Apart from the creation, God existed in eternity. Mind you, this is all theory on my part, but Eternity is not a lot of time, it is eternal, because it has no time. Time is part of our existence, it is here for us. Now, angelic beings, I have no theory about them, did they exist in eternity, apart from the physical creation, I so not know. I do believe that eternity existed (I hate using tenses where there is no time, but I have no words to express an existence (another time word) in a timeless realm. I see the existence of angelic beings as a creation, but perhaps apart from the physical universe, and "then" with God in eternity, or perhaps, they were created at the same "time" as time, or maybe later, no clue. In any case, the point I am failing to communicate, is an effort to set the stage of creation, including light. What we know, is that the first thing mentioned "in the beginning", was the earth, and that it was unformed, dark, and empty. However formless it may have been it had a surface, since the Spirit moved over it. At that point, something is 'moving' over something physical, so at that point at least, is not sooner, time existed. "Then", a sequence word - sequences do not happen apart from time - God said let their be light. We learn that it is so. The Sun and the moon and the stars, are not yet created. Still, light now exists, and God separated light, from dark, then Genesis says there was evening and morning, and we have the first unit of time mentioned in the Bible, a cycle of dark and light, called a day. My contention is, that this may, or may not have been 24 hours as we think of them, but a day is one cycle of light and dark. Later it appears that the Sun is created to rule the day, and the moon to rule the night. I am inclined to think that possible at this point, a day might well be 24 hours long. I see no reason to assume any other length of time, though it could be. Possibly, as things have decayed over time, the length of a day may have or is being changed, but until the curse on the creation, I don't think a spinning top, would have ever stopped spinning, lol. I agree with Steve in pointing out, that there is coming a day, where there is no more Sun, and there is also, no more night. Could be metaphorical language, or, maybe not. One day we will know. The light/dark/day/night is interesting, but,it is basically one sentence of two, about something, obviously not too important for us to know the specifics of. I think the take away here is: In the beginning . . . . . God After that, the Creation. The creation then, shows us something about God, very smart, very powerful, and we are not, yet He loves us! If I were to say anything further, I would just be further displaying my ignorance. An ant, probably cannot comprehend exactly what the Eiffel Tower is. On the other hand, it does not need to, in order to fulfill it's purpose in life.

Luke 6:1-26 Genesis 3:1-5:32 Psalm 2 Audio 6:46 Audio 4:14 Audio 1:20 The above verse addresses are linked to Bible Gateway. That is an easy way to read (or listen to) the Bible verses, and choose your version. Personally, I prefer written, that way I can go at my own pace, and think about it, before moving on. Nothing wrong with doing either or both. The Bible says faith comes by hearing. See the picture below to get an idea of what to expect if you follow the above links. 6. I pretty much agree on the space/time/matter thing. That is also how I view it as well. When "God created the heavens and the earth," in my mind I sort of see that as - God created the earth and the things outside of the earth. Gen 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. Gen 1:5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. The interesting thing about this really is that there was a light and there was a dark, one was day, the other night. Notice later though: Gen 1:14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; Gen 1:15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so. Gen 1:16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. Gen 1:17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, Gen 1:18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. One takeaway to me there is, as jade mentioned is there was a light source prior to the sun (as i surmised above, I believe it was God Himself). Also, though, notice in 15 and 16, there is a greater light to rule the day and a lesser light to rule the night. This did not exist prior to day four, so the nights before day four were likely totally pitch black. Part of this makes me wonder how gap theorists are able to internally reconcile this.

  9. Hello AM3 Christianity is a faith, it is not an intellectual argument. Its not one of the sciences either. Christianity is not based upon rational argument. It is based upon the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that regenerates and transforms the human heart and mind. Biblical Christianity lies outside your capacity to intellectually investigate it --- the world of the metaphysical cannot be investigated with the Scientific Method or with the Rationalism of intellectualized philosophical arguments. This is why the Lord Jesus said, "Have faith in God"__Mark 11:22 And why the Lord Jesus said we are to receive the Kingdom of Heaven like a little child would receive it.

First God drew me by Grace to Christ, asap put me in the bible and its the ONLY thing I fed from. Way too many men in the pulpits teach from intellectual physcology minds of men. You start over . One more thing , are you in a sin . IF so cease it . SIN wars AGAINST the soul and man its messes with the mind.

Later He creates the sun and the moon and the stars. So what is the day and night here? The initial creation of the universe? Something else? I have no answers.

Corrie ten Boom's dire warning today: concerning the false pre-trib beliefs of most americans (apparently), deceived by the enemy. https://z3news.com/w/corrie-ten-boom-beware-false-teaching-pretribulation-rapture/ excerpt: " ........... .. ................ .................. In China, the Christians were told, “Don’t worry, before the tribulation comes you will be translated – raptured.” Then came a terrible persecution. Millions of Christians were tortured to death. Later I heard a Bishop from China say, sadly, “We have failed. We should have made the people strong for persecution, rather than telling them Jesus would come first. Tell the people how to be strong in times of persecution, how to stand when the tribulation comes, to stand and not faint.” I feel I have a divine mandate to go and tell the people of this world that it is possible to be strong in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are in training for the tribulation, but more than sixty percent of the Body of Christ across the world has already entered into the tribulation. There is no way to escape it. We are next. Since I have already gone through prison for Jesus’ sake, and since I met the Bishop in China, now every time I read a good Bible text I think, “Hey, I can use that in the time of tribulation.” Then I write it down and learn it by heart. When I was in the concentration camp, a camp where only twenty percent of the women came out alive, .................. .............. ............. "

"Members of your own family will be ['may' be] your worst enemies" "Father will turn against son, son against father" (and turn one another in to be put to death(literally) ) ... 'The whole world (including "the household of faith or close family") is deceived, and refuses to stop serving demons.' applies to many (most around us). 'Traps are laid every day in the house of God even, for those who are seeking to serve God' and with many other warnings TODAY, Yahweh through Jesus, through His Word, warns us every one of the PERNICIOUSNESS of all (yes, all-) society/ mankind/ neighborhoods around us and far away. Yet also Yahweh's Promise of His Word: He calls and chooses and keeps A REMNANT out from every people on earth, for Himself, His Testimony all over the world, His people .....

  20. See, I think this is the part that humans have trouble with. Believe in Jesus and you are saved. That's it??? Well I feel like I should do more... And then out comes the long list of additions to the Gospel (which God says nullifies the Gospel). This was the trouble the Jews had with the Gospel of Grace after so long living by the 613 commandments. Child-like faith is accepting the Gospel faith in Jesus Christ plus nothing.

  22. Wow. I kind of feel like Obi Wan Kenobi facing multiple light saber questions from General Grievous all at the same time. And I am striving to hit that one central point that all converge on... I believe child-like faith is a willingness to accept truth as true. You CAN learn how or why something is true, in fact, we are commanded to test everything to see if it is true (including the spirits) 1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 1 John 4:1. But the point I am driving at is you can put your trust in God like a little child does, say, their parents... in matters you can't find answers to. And I find that eventually you do get those answers, but in the mean time believing is seeing. Which is not the same thing as blind faith. Atheists have blind faith. Evolutionists have blind faith. Blind faith is a belief no matter evidence to the contrary. Believing is seeing is faith in a God who has proven himself over and over and over and over to be trustworthy and to trust him in moments of uncertainty and no answers at the ready. The heavens declare the glory of God. If these be silent the rocks would cry out. Footprints of the Creator. Evolutionists cop out when asked where everything came from in absolute biogenesis. Bottom line, unless an eternal being who transcends the laws of physics, brought everything into existence the first and second laws of thermodynamics indicate nothing should exist. Not that Creator has indeed communicated with us in his word the Bible. Authenticated by another footprint of his; omniscience... his unique ability to forth tell historic events before they happen. In his word he says if you believe in his Son (the genuine Jesus, not the jesus of LDS or Jehovah's Witnesses, or Islam, or whatever else) then you ARE saved. Whether you "feel" like it or not. John 3:16-18 etc. Maybe THIS is that convergence point in that light saber dual I mentioned above that goes on in your own mind. That this is the point where you must simply believe with child-like faith that your belief in Jesus Christ is your salvation.

  26. I am not saying this directly to you, but to all. I just used your quote as reference. The question to be made is: Why so many people try to bring this topic so many times? Once saved always saved? Can I lose my salvation? Really, if you are actually a genuine believer then it does not matter if your salvation can be lost or not because all genuine believers will be saved. "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." - Revelation 3:5 And genuine believers cannot lose their salvation. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand." - John 10:27-28 What I have noticed is that people who are looking for ways to know if they can potentially lose their salvation is: They are looking for a hole to practice sin and potentially keep on it. First, if you have actually repented then you would not be looking for the conscious and constant practice of sin in your life. If you do, repent and make a decision of what you want. Giving up to temptation is another thing, and you would not like to keep it. For this I recommend you ask the Lord what you need to overcome it. "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;" - James 1:6-7 What has helped me with temptations is that giving up to them is a waste of time, I need to learn how to despise the works of the flesh, to love the Lord and put His will above mine. "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." - John 6:63 Be sure of one thing: Without His help you won't be able to achieve anything. "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." - John 15:5 And do not fall into enemy's traps, which are common during temptation. "Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone." - James 1:13 Take care, who leads you to sin is the devil and yourself. Follow Jesus!

  27. God does "speak to us", both through the scriptures and through His Spirit. The God of scripture is the same God that spoke to, and through, the characters of the Bible. Hearing His voice is difficult for us - because we are conditioned by the world to ignore it (and to be suspicious of any experience beyond the senses), but that's a limitation of us, not a change in God. Even with experience, trust in God still requires faith to know that the experience is actually God. I find that experience with God is not as conspicuous as some seem to claim. We have to listen for the "still small voice" through the wind and earthquake and fire (1 Kin 19:11-13), but it is real nonetheless. The Bible is God's highest authoritative communication to humanity. It is God speaking to us. Studying scripture is therefore an act of fellowship - hearing to His words and getting to know Him.

  29. Reading the same passages over again in the Bible never ceases to amaze me! Either I am reminded of a good truth or He reveals something new to me. I love digging for those precious gems that are hidden, like in the book of Nehemiah. At first you wouldn't think there's much to grasp (oh yeah they're rebuilding a wall,) but in reality there's lots of life lessons in there...depending on God, balance between praying/doing, working together, how to handle opposition from outside, how to handle it from within, etc. Some of the things that stood out to me in Day 1 reading: Verse 30 of Luke 5 says the Pharisees and scribes were grumbling, which obviously God doesn't like. To me it's a reminder of how we can sometimes complain, and worry about what other people are doing, but not be focused on what God has for us to be doing. We must not be conformed to this world/its ways, and that is a challenge to us all even if we are not aware of it. Also, in Genesis 2:6 – When it's talking about the mist of the ground. Adam & Eve didn't have to work hard to care for the grounds, it was self sufficient. I wonder if they knew what they'd be giving up to eat of the only tree they weren't supposed to if they'd still have done what they did. I imagine they would have because sin doesn't often show its ugly after effects beforehand...it's enticing and alluring. The Bible even says sin is fun for a season, but afterwards there's sorrow. A good reminder for us all to be on guard against the temptations of the enemy. Have a blessed day Worthy Fam! (((Hugs))) ~ Gem

  34. God does not want anybody lost. He bends over backwards to accommodate us in our folly. I am unsure why we have to keep asking the question of, 'can I fall away' or 'am I always saved'. If we understand and embrace what we know of the Lord wholeheartedly, giving as much of ourselves that we can understand to Him; what else must we do? Jump thru dogmas' hoops? Hurl ourselves thru doctrines' doors to the unknown nirvana of nothingness? Confuse ourselves with conflicting discussions? Worry about something we have so little chance of ever understanding outside of our own personal individual faith? There is way too much psycho-Heresy and philosophy floating around in the minds of 'the leaders' and the products of our seminaries and bible colleges. Reading the actual bible for ourselves and studying the thoughts of the church fathers is also questioned by our religious oligarchy. Perhaps because they know how much has been tainted by poor translations and deliberate falsifying of many of the original documents. We will stand alone before our Lord. All the books, sermons and a cartload of DVDs will be left behind. It is just you and me, individually, that has to stand before our Lord Yeshua. It is in HIM that we put our trust. Trust in the Lord with all your hearts and lean NOT on your own understanding [or those theologians]. In all your way acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.

  36. Hi Spider-Man. You said; I'm not Catholic but like to pray in Catholic Churches and sometimes attend Mass. ******************************************************************* Check this out Spider-Man and maybe you might think again about attending a Catholic Mass. I know all about the Catholic mass now as an adult. As an alter boy I once asked the priest what we were saying during mass, which was said in Latin in my day as an alter boy. We as young boys just parroted off what we learnt by repetition, as taught by the sisters. He told me not to worry about what's being said and what the meaning of it all was, just come in where your supposed to respond. I have since learnt that the Catholic mass is proved invalid by the scriptures. The invalidity of the Mass is proved by its being continued. If any Mass could validly apply the infinite merits of Christ's sacrifice for men, Then one Mass would suffice for eternity, since His work is infinite. The fact that a priest offers Mass for the same people every day, including every Sunday proves that yesterdays and last Sunday's Mass were useless and invalid, for they accomplished no eternal Divine work. Note especially Hebrews 10:12. "ONE sacrifice; 10:14, by ONE offering; 10:18, NO more offering for sin. Leviticus 6:30. "AND NO SIN OFFERING, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: IT SHALL BE BURNT IN THE FIRE." If the Mass is an offering for sin, and according to THE CATHOLIC CATECHISM, Jesus offers Himself daily as a sin offering same as He did on the Cross, If this is the case, the sacrifice CANNOT BE EATEN. It can, as Jesus instructed us, be symbolically remembered, His flesh and blood cannot, according to the above Scriptures, be literally eaten. Jesus Christ in His flesh and blood body now sits at His Fathers right hand and is not being eaten. The life of all flesh is the blood just as Jesus is the life of all human beings who accept Him. When He says you must eat my flesh and drink my blood, and in doing so symbolically in remembrance of Him we accept eternal life. Jesus called Himself the bread of God! "For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world" (John 6:33). "Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John6:33-35). Many of Jesus's disciples knowing God's aversion to drinking blood alone were perplexed by Jesus saying believers must drink His blood. They thought He meant they were to literally drink His blood, but this was not so and He explained this in John 6:63. "Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:60-63). Many followers mumbled asking how one can literally eat Jesus's flesh and drink His blood. Jesus explained it clearly, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). Literal flesh profiteth nothing the words Jesus spoke were are spirit and THEY are life. We are to physically remember Him through eating literal bread and drinking literal wine and in doing so we are spiritually eating His Words and spiritually becoming one with Him. Scripture proves the Lords supper is the outward rite in which believers eat broken bread, not flesh, and drink the fruit of the vine, not blood. to COMMEMORATE the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus Christ until He comes again (READ, Matt. 26:26-30; Mark 14:17-25; Luke 22:14-20; 1 Cor. 11:20-30), there is not excuse for believing otherwise. The "symbols," the "bread" and the "wine," will always remain just that, "literal bread and wine" regardless of who or what prayer is said over them. No man can change these elements into Jesus Christs real flesh and blood in any sense. WHY, HOW CAN CATHOLICS, POPES, BISHOPS, CARDINALS, PRIESTS, IGNORE THIS STATEMENT BY JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF? IT'S SO THEY CAN AND DO HOLD THE PEOPLE, THEIR FOLLOWERS IN BONDAGE AND FEAR TO THEMSELVES! In Matthew 26 verse 29, Jesus Himself calls the cup of wine, "this fruit of the vine," and not His Blood! Matt. 26:27, And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; V 28, For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. V 29, But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. Here Christ Himself calls it; FRUIT OF THE VINE.” TRANSUBSTANCIATION AND ADORATION OF THE WAFER WAS DECLARED AND DECREED BY THE POPES. Transubstanciation was declared and decreed by Pope Innocent 111 in the year 1215 A.D. By this doctrine the priest pretends to perform a daily miracle by changing a wafer into the body of Christ, and then he pretends to eat Him alive in the presence of the people during Mass. The Gospel condems such absurdities. Holy Communion is simply a memorial of the sacrifice of Christ (Luke 22:19,, 20; John 6:35; 1 Cor:26). The adoration of the wafer (HOST) was invented by Pope Honorius in 1220 A.D. The Catholic Church also made it obligatory to have communion at least once per week, and even every day if possible. If you read the Scriptures quoted you will clearly see nothing has been added. Ignatius' letter to the Smyrneans 105 a.d.- He mentions the eucharist in his letter. The word eucharist is not one time mentioned in the entire Bible? Also there is no letter to the Smyrneans in the Bible either that I can find? Many people of many religious persuasions wrote many letters over the years but unless they are in the Bible they are of no substance as far as supporting doctrin goes.

  37. Really? thats the only point you addressed? So you think catholics love their neighbors? go to your library and look up the inquisitions. Catholicism also teaches that only THEY are the true church. "On August 24, 1527, Roman Catholics in France, by prearranged plan, under Jesuit influence, murdered 70,000 Protestants within the space of two months. The Pope rejoiced when he heard the news of the successful outcome."-Western Watchman, Nov.21, 1912 (Catholic) Therefore the pope ordered "that malicious and abominable sect of malignants," if they "refuse to abjure, to be crushed like venomous snakes."--Wylie, b. 16, ch. 1. Decreti, pars ii. causa xxiii. quaest v. can. xlvii: "Those are not to be accounted homicides who, fired with zeal for Mother Church, may have killed excommunicated persons." "That the Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has ever existed among mankind, will be questioned by no Protestant who has a competent knowledge of history . . . It is impossible to form a complete conception of the multitude of her victims, and it is quite certain that no powers of imagination can adequately realize their sufferings."--W. E. H. Lecky, History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe, vol. 2, p. 32, 1910 edition. (An excellent though lengthy article describing in detail the right of the Roman Catholic Church to do this, will be found in The Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. 12, p. 266.) "For professing faith contrary to the teachings of the Church of Rome, history records the martyrdom of more then one hundred million people. A million Waldenses and Albigenses [Swiss and French Protestants] perished during a crusade proclaimed by Pope Innocent III in 1208. Beginning from the establishment of the Jesuits in 1540 to 1580, nine hundred thousand were destroyed. One hundred and fifty thousand perished by the Inquisition in thirty years. Within the space of thirty-eight years after the edict of Charles V against the Protestants, fifty thousand persons were hanged, beheaded, or burned alive for heresy. Eighteen thousand more perished during the administration of the Duke of Alva in five and a half years."--Brief Bible Readings, p. 16. There were Waldensians ( Who in 1487 Pope Innocent VIII issued a bull for their extermination ) , Albigensians ( who Pope Innocent III initiated a 20-year military campaign against ), the Huguenots, etc. "Experience teaches that there is no other remedy for the evil, but to put heretics (Protestants) to death; for the (Romish) church proceeded gradually and tried every remedy: at first she merely excommunicatied them; afterwards she added a fine; then she banished them; and finally she was constrained to put them to death." -Cardinal Bellarmine famous champion of Romanism cited by Schumucker p. 76. The Word of God says... "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me." John 16:2-3 "You ask if he (the Roman Catholic) were lord in the land, and you were in a minority, if not in numbers yet in power, what would he do to you? That, we say, would entirely depend upon circumstances. If it would benefit the cause of Catholicism, he would tolerate you: If expedient, he would imprison you, banish you, fine you; possibly, he might even hang you. But be assured of one thing: He would never tolerate you for the sake of 'the glorious principles of civil and religious liberty' . . . Catholicism is the most intolerant of creeds. It is intolerance itself, for it is truth itself."--"Civil and Religious Liberty," in The Rambler, 8, Sept, 1851, pp. 174, 178. ["The Rambler" was an English Roman Catholic journal published from 1848 to 1862]. "From the birth of popery to the present time, it is estimated by careful and credible historians, that more than fifty millions of the human family, have been slaughtered for the crime of heresy by popish persecutors,--an average of more than 40,000 religious murders for every year of the existence of popery to the present day. Of course the average number of victims yearly, was vastly greater, during those gloomy ages when popery was in her glory and reigned despot of the world; and it has been much less since the power of the popes has diminished to tyrannize over the nations, and to compel the princes of the earth, by the terrors of excommunication, interdiction, and deposition, to butcher their heretical subjects."--John Dowling, The History of Romanism, pp. 541-542. 39. No you would not because you don't have that ability . Moreover we all arrive in heaven at the same time so you wouldn't even notice or have ability to see what is going on earth . Hebrews 9:27 27And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. There is one Judgement Seat Christ , Jesus comes once to reward us and and he has rewards with him as stated above . Not that you die and wait sitting on cloud 2000 years praying for others on earth. If you want to pray for somebody pray now. Hope that will enlighten you.

  41. So you would condemn Jesus for calling people snakes, vipers, sons of satan, that they were going to hell, etc.? This has NOTHING to do with "interpreting" the Bible!~ You are, of course assuming that catholics are "Christian" LOL. Please quote the WHOLE passage, please, not just a little part of it.

  42. I found this interesting; . . . . link, http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/ LIST OF CATHOLIC HERESIES And HUMAN TRADITIONS ADOPTED and PERPETUATED by the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE COURSE OF 1600 YEARS (Compiled by Rev. Stephen L. Testa) “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” —Jesus in John 8:32 Notice: These dates are in many cases approximate. Many of these heresies had been current in the Church years before, but only when they were officially adopted by a Church council and proclaimed by the pope as dogma of faith, did they become binding on Catholics. And doctrine to be true must conform to the Word of God. “To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20) At the Reformation in the 16th Century these heresies were repudiated as having no part in the Religion of Jesus as taught in the New Testament. Heresy Date OF ALL THE HUMAN TRADITIONS taught and practiced by the Roman Catholic Church, which are contrary to the Bible, the most ancient are the prayers for the dead and the sign of the Cross. Both began 300 years after Christ. 310 Wax Candles introduced in church 320 Veneration of angels and dead saints 375 The Mass, as a daily celebration, adopted 394 The worship of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the use of the term, "Mother of God", as applied to her, originated in the Council of Ephesus 431 Priests began to dress differently from the laity 500 Extreme Unction 526 The doctrine of Purgatory was first established by Gregory the Great 593 The Latin language, as the language of prayer and worship in churches, was also imposed by Pope Gregory I. 600 years after Christ The Word of God forbids praying and teaching in an unknown tongue. (1st Corinthians 14:9). 600 The Bible teaches that we pray to God alone. In the primitive church never were prayers directed to Mary, or to dead saints. This practice began in the Roman Church. (Matthew 11:28; Luke 1:46; Acts 10:25-26; 14:14-18) 600 The Papacy is of pagan origin. The title of pope or universal bishop, was first given to the bishop of Rome by the wicked emperor Phocas. This he did to spite Bishop Ciriacus of Constantinople, who had justly excommunicated him for his having caused the assassination of his predecessor emperor Mauritius. Gregory 1, then bishop of Rome, refused the title, but his successor, Boniface III, first assumed title "pope." Jesus did not appoint Peter to the headship of the apostles and forbade any such notion. (Luke 22:24-26; Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18; 1st Corinthians 3:11). Note: Nor is there any mention in Scripture, nor in history, that Peter ever was in Rome, much less that he was pope there for 25 years; Clement, 3rd bishop of Rome, remarks that "there is no real 1st century evidence that Peter ever was in Rome." 610 The kissing of the Pope's feet It had been a pagan custom to kiss the feet of emperors. The Word of God forbids such practices. (Read Acts 10:25-26; Revelation 19:10; 22:9). 709 The Temporal power of the Popes When Pepin, the usurper of the throne of France, descended into Italy, called by Pope Stephen II, to war against the Italian Lombards, he defeated them and gave the city of Rome and surrounding territory to the pope. Jesus expressly forbade such a thing, and He himself refused worldly kingship. (Read Matthew 4:8-9; 20:25-26; John 18:38). 750 Worship of the cross, images and relics was authorized This was by order of Dowager Empress Irene of Constantinople, who first caused to pluck the eyes of her own son, Constantine VI, and then called a church council at the request of Hadrian I, pope of Rome at that time. Such practice is called simply IDOLATRY in the Bible, and is severely condemned. (Read Exodus 20:4; 3:17; Deuteronomy 27:15; Psalm 115). 788 Holy Water, mixed with a pinch of salt and blessed by the priest, was authorized 850 The veneration of St. Joseph began 890 The baptism of bells was instituted by Pope John XIV 965 Canonization of dead saints, first by Pope John XV Every believer and follower of Christ is called saint in the Bible. (Read Romans 1:7; 1st Colossians 1:2). 995 Fasting on Fridays and during Lent were imposed Imposed by popes said to be interested in the commerce of fish. (Bull, or permit to eat meat), some authorities say, began in the year 700. This is against the plain teaching of the Bible. (Read Matthew 15:10; 1st Corinthians 10:25; 1st Timothy 4:1-3). 998 The Mass was developed gradually as a sacrifice; attendance made obligatory in the 11th century. The Bible teaches that the sacrifice of Christ was offered once and for all, and is not to be repeated, but only commemorated in the Lord's Supper. (Read Hebrews 7:27; 9:26-28; 10:10-14). The celibacy of the priesthood was decreed by Pope Hildebrand, Boniface VII Jesus imposed no such rule, nor did any of the apostles. On the contrary, St. Peter was a married man, and St. Paul says that bishops were to have wife and children. (Read 1st Timothy 3:2,5, and 12; Matthew 8:14-15). 1079 The Rosary, or prayer beads was introduced by Peter the Hermit, in the year 1090. Copied from Hindus and Mohammedans The counting of prayers is a pagan practice and is expressly condemned by Christ. (Matthew 6:5-13). 1090 The Inquisition of heretics was instituted by the Council of Verona in the year 1184. Jesus never taught the use of force to spread His religion 1184 The sale of Indulgences, commonly regarded as a purchase of forgiveness and a permit to indulge in sin. Christianity, as taught in the Bible, condemns such a traffic and it was the protest against this traffic that brought on the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. 1190 The dogma of Transubstantiation was decreed by Pope Innocent III, in the year By this doctrine the priest pretends to perform a daily miracle by changing a wafer into the body of Christ, and then he pretends to eat Him alive in the presence of his people during Mass. The Bible condemns such absurdities; for the Lord's Supper is simply a memorial of the sacrifice of Christ. The spiritual presence of Christ is implied in the Lord's Supper. (Read Luke 22:19-20; John 6:35; 1st Corinthians 11:26). 1215 Confession of sin to the priest at least once a year was instituted by Pope Innocent III., in the Lateran Council The Bible commands us to confess our sins direct to God. (Read Psalm 51:1-10; Luke 7:48; 15:21; 1st John 1:8-9). 1215 The adoration of the wafer (Host), was decreed by Pope Honorius So the Roman Church worships a God made by human hands. This is plain idolatry and absolutely contrary to the spirit of the Gospel. (Read John 4:24). 1220 The Bible forbidden to laymen and placed in the Index of forbidden books by the Council of Valencia Jesus commanded that the Scriptures should be read by all. (John 5:39; 1st Timothy 3:15-17). 1229 The Scapular was invented by Simon Stock, and English monk It is a piece of brown cloth, with the picture of the Virgin and supposed to contain supernatural virtue to protect from all dangers those who wear it on naked skin. This is fetishism. 1287 The Roman Church forbade the cup to the laity, by instituting the communion of one kind in the Council of Constance The Bible commands us to celebrate the Lord's Supper with unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine. (Read Matthew 26:27; 1st Corinthians 11:26-29). 1414 The doctrine of Purgatory was proclaimed as a dogma of faith by Council of Florence There is not one word in the Bible that would teach the purgatory of priests. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sins. (Read 1st John 1:7-9; 2:1-2; John 5:24; Romans 8:1). 1439 The doctrine of 7 Sacraments affirmed The Bible says that Christ instituted only two ordinances, Baptism and the Lord's Supper. (Read Matthew 28:19-20; 26:26-28). 1439 The Ave Maria, part of the last It was completed 50 years afterward and finally approved by Pope Sixtus V, at the end of the 16th century. 1508 The Council of Trent, held in the year 1545, declared that Tradition is of equal authority with the Bible By tradition is meant human teachings. The Pharisees believed the same way, and Jesus bitterly condemned them, for by teaching human tradition, they nullified the commandments of God. (Read Mark 7:7-13; Colossians 2:8; Revelation 22:18). 1545 The apocryphal books were added to the Bible also by the Council of Trent These books were not recognized as canonical by the Jewish Church. (See Revelation 22:8-9). 1546 The Creed of Pope Pius IV was imposed as the official creed 1560 years after Christ and the apostles True Christians retain the Holy Scriptures as their creed. Hence their creed is 1500 years older than the creed of Roman Catholics. (Read Galatians 1:8). 1560 The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX The Bible states that all men, with the sole exception of Christ, are sinners. Mary herself had need of a Savior. (Read Romans 3:23; 5:12; Psalm 51:5; Luke 1:30,46,47). 1834 In the year 1870 after Christ, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of Papal Infallibility This is a blasphemy and the sign of the apostasy and of the antichrist predicted by St. Paul. (Read 2nd Thessalonians 2:2-12; Revelation 17:1-9; 13:5-8,18). Many Bible students see the number of the beast (Rev. 13:18), 666 in the Roman letters of the Pope's title: "VICARIVS FILII DEI." -- V-5, I-1; C-100, I-1; V-S, I-1; L-50, I-1; I-1; D-500, I-l — Total, 666. 1870 Pope Plus X, in the year 1907, condemned together with "Modernism", all the discoveries of modern science which are not approved by the Church Pius IX had done the same thing in the Syllabus of 1864. 1907 In the year 1930 Pius XI, condemned the Public Schools 1930 In the year 1931 the same pope Pius XI, reaffirmed the doctrine that Mary is "the Mother of God" This doctrine was first invented by the Council of Ephesus in the year 431. This is a heresy contrary by Mary's own words. (Read Luke 1:46-49; John 2: l-5). 1931 In the year 1950 the last dogma was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary 1950
