  1. Asherah was one of the false gods [goddesses] worshiped by the Canaanites in the Promised Land. We really don't know what an Asherah pole looked like in the Old Testament because the Bible does not describe them. Some say it was just a tree with carvings of Asherah on it, some say an erected pole with various carvings on it, some say it was phallic in nature. There's no way to no for sure what they looked like. However, when God brought the Hebrews TO the Promised Land, he told them to rid the Promised Land of certain inhabitants, practices, and evil. God wasn't cruel to these people by wiping them out. In fact, he was merciful in giving them hundreds of years to repent before he did. That's what he told Abraham when charging him with being the father of a great nation that the whole world would be blessed by. He said Abraham's descendants would be enslaved for centuries before going to the Promised Land because the people in the Promised Land who were wicked had not reached their maximum rebelliousness for which there was no turning back. Anyway.....about Asherah. The reason that God wanted these pagan people destroyed was because he knew that their pagan practices would "rub off" on his Hebrew people - from which he was going to bring Christ. And sure enough - the Hebrews did not destroy all that God said to and the Asherah poles and the worship of Asherah became a part of their own religious practice as well as burning babies in fires and having homosexual/heterosexual prostitutes at the altar of some of these false gods. All this is why Israel and Judah were destroyed by God with only Judah returning. It's VERY important that when God says to stay away from certain things, that we obey him. God isn't raining on our parade, but protecting us from ourselves. So, no, Asherah was not God's wife. God had/has no wife. God does speak of himself as a husband - but to his people. Just as Jesus Christ is the groom of the bride - which is the church. BUT because certain people excavating in Israel find small idols resembling a woman in ancient homes of Hebrews and because they have only a tiny, tiny, knowledge of the scriptures - they force an idea that is not true onto the historical scholarship of the day. They claim that the Jews believed that God had a wife. Not true at all.

  2. When people are in pain and it feels never ending they often say things they don't really mean ( even if in that moment of time they feel that they do mean it ) Think how many women in the throes of labour say " never again " and a LOT worse yet go on to have more children PAIN HURTS ..yes that sound obvious but when you are going through it you just want it to stop any way you can think of it stopping so please don't get discouraged keep encouraging him to know that " This too will pass " Try making plans for what you will do when this is in the past and not the present and the future and hold onto your dreams as well as each other and most importantly Christ We will keep praying with and for you both

Get down on your knees and make sure that you have the Holy Spirit with you..... then ask him to tell you what to do when the time comes.... if you have the spirit he will either keep you from trouble or show you how to get through it. And it's as simple as that. I thought about finding a place in SE Oklahoma and just disappear

  6. The worship of Asherah is condemned in the Bible repeatedly. When the Old Testament speaks of groves and poles as places and things of worship or things to be destroyed it's referring to the worship of Asherah. What you've read about Asherah is probably, at best, misguided people who are taking the fact that the ancient Hebrews sometimes did turn to pagan worship practices and may well have tried to combine the religions at different points in time. At worst it's just people trying to take evidence and make it suit a narrative in an attempt to discredit Christianity. Like I said it's condemned over and over again.

  8. There is no Gospel revealing a false gospel of works, there is the work that Jesus Christ came to do, and finished, there is example in Him to follow, because then we would receive the same Spirit of the Son into us, and we then would resist the talkers in this life, who touch not one of the commandments with their hands, they only speak and do not, as Jesus testified for us... Luke 11:46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Jesus did everything well, we know when Christ is in us the same way, when we are not morally abandoned, when we talk against doing what is right, all the right ways of the Lord, I wonder if we show support for God or for the wicked one.. Mark 7:37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hathdone all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. Acts 13:10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 2 Corinthians 13:7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

  10. false teaching is rampant and it needs to be addressed. its way more common than many realize and its creeping into western churches I agree , how do we get rid of false gospels that add “ but ya gotta repent from sins” to Paul’s Gospel Of Grace ? How do we make people see that knowing all of your sins are on the Cross and you can never be condemned as Jesus said, does not promote licentiousness but promotes a Love for God that brings out a natural obedience? Lets unite to fight sin God’s Way-Grace.Are you with me?

  11. This is the reason all of this stuff is so difficult to drill into people’s heads .....One has to LIVE it to understand it.....only a visit from the Holy Spirit That convicts one of the wretchedness Of Himself Before a Holy God can get one to where they need to be......Hopefully If one sees that the Mercy Of God is the only hope he has, he will make the next move and cry out like the Publican did—- “ Lord , have mercy on me, a sinner!” It worked for me.What a great God we have! “ ALL those that ask for Mercy shall receive it” The starting point of Christianity is seeing one’s wretchedness.Pray for a convicting visit by the Holy Spirit. “ Nobody comes to God lest the Spirit draw him”

I've recently spent a lot of time thinking on this subject (literally just praying about it this morning in fact) and I feel like when we stand in those hours/days/weeks His Spirit will carry us and bear with us. We don't have to worry and I'm not sure it's something we can really prepare for other than being wise and knowing His Word so we can recognize the times. His hand will always be upon His children, and He will walk with us to the very end. Whatever that end may be.

  15. No better advice than quoting that scripture verse. It says it all. Imagine, millions of believers live in large city's and town's and has no resources to escape to dugouts ect. What are they to do, leave their jobs and whatever existence they have and run to the hills. No, prayer and trust in the Lord for his divine shield and protection as the scripture quoted would keep your heart at ease. Indeed the world is getting tougher in many aspects, like food, shelter and even work, together with the criminal elements. We still have to do some basics and store a little as in the manner when a storm is announced or coming.

  17. Hi Existential Mabel, The best way to prepare for persecution and be ready is to have a strong grounded relationship with God, fortify myself with his Word and Prayer. I'd like to think my faith is strong, but if I was being tortured I wonder if I could withstand that even though I know I love the Lord. That's why I'm going to do what the word says here and pray for the protective armor and rely on God to see me through if and when the time comes. Ephesians 6:13, "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand”

  18. There is only one way to prepare, if you can even prepare, and that is to have the faith one needs to follow through to the end. Trust Him in the little things and when it comes to the bigger things in life, it will be second nature. Trying to "do it yourself" is where failure begins.

True faith in Christ is believing and following His WORD We can't continue in Gods Word and Plan of Mercy and Grace through His only begotten Son Christ Jesus and also continue living in satans world ie murdering, stealing, prostitution, drug dealing, and think, all is good, we are covered, we don't even need to repent or confess our sins. No that is wrong and misleading away from Gods WORD

  21. I generally seldom if ever talk about my military experiences to anyone. Even the infrequent occasions I would write home, what could I say? I intended to keep this thread upbeat and tell interesting war stories and fairy tales so to speak, and how the Lord protected us and what He did for us. Not to bring back bad memories and old wounds. Yep, apparently and fortunately times and attitudes have changed toward our service personnel. Have a few bad memories myself in airports and in public proudly wearing my class A uniform. And in civilian attire on leave or off base, sticking out like a sore thumb with the [identifier] barely any hair, and my adopted and learned military demeanor and conduct were give away's. There's an old military idiom I know most have heard in passing, "War is Hell". No it's not, not even remotely close. The greatest generation [the WW II veterans and patriots] are all but gone now. The Viet Nam era generation is starting this historical cycle all over again. It breaks my heart that a person that gives his or her last measure of self; puts his or her life on the line and valiantly and courageously serves this country [military, police, firemen, disaster workers, etc.] and eventually dies, that doesn't know Christ Jesus as their own personal Savior. I amend that last sentence to include every precious human soul. At my ripe old age I think I ponder on things too much. I've heard many testimonies about people whom faced sudden imminent immediate death and no way out, they were certain this was the end of their existence. Many claim their whole entire lives flashed before them in detail in a twinkling of an eye. I can believe that. Does the twinkling of an eye remind us of something? The thief on the cross next to Jesus didn't have much time to live, he certainly had no time to demonstrate he repented of his sins, yet he was saved by the Grace of God. I've wondered, in that final second before one meets his or her eternal fate, if they called out to Jesus sincerely to save them???

  22. (Another one of my absolute favorites!) 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus Louisa M. R. Stead 1. ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!” Refrain: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er; Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! Oh, for grace to trust Him more! 2. Oh, how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust His cleansing blood; And in simple faith to plunge me ’Neath the healing, cleansing flood! 3. Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. 4. I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that Thou art with me, Wilt be with me to the end.

  23. Hi Figure of eighty, I think you will get lots of good advice when others come on the forum. For my part I suggest that the more we look at ourselves the more we know our failings our weaknesses. And often those people who seem confident are often putting on a front, so don`t measure yourself by them. Thus said, so how to esteem yourself. I find that by appreciating the Lord more and more that my focus is on Him and not myself. Also as the Holy Spirit highlights an area or attitude that needs changing, and I repent and work on that attitude, then I realise that bit by bit I am changing and that is encouraging. But never, never compare yourself with others, for we only see them at their `best,` in public and not really what is going on in their heads. So look to grow and mature in the Lord, and the rest will follow. all the best, Marilyn.

  24. I've noticed there's a number of military veterans here on Worthy. I thought it might be fun and interesting to share some military experiences and things that happened that are still in our memories. We will avoid all the gory stuff and things that we only talk with God about. Personally, I have so many memories I don't know where to start... At Travis Air Force Base in California I was about to board a Boeing 707 jet for my overseas deployment to Viet Nam. It was night time but the tarmac was well lit. Approaching the jet I looked at it and thought, "you gots to be kidding me". The paint on it was falling off all over the place, and aft of the engines, underneath the wings and both sides of the fuselage, was completely black from the jet exhaust. An airliner I had never heard of, Seaboard World; came back on another airline I never heard of, Tiger Airlines? I didn't have to worry about my tour, because I didn't think I was even going to make it there It was a very long flight and landed twice for fuel, total time from departure to arrival was about 28 hours. I couldn't sleep during the flight at all, all wound up in anticipation of the unknown. Rapidly descending the pilot announced we've entered Viet Nam airspace and will be landing in a few minutes. Looking out the window it appeared something was being shot up at us, I though, "Oh Boy", here we go... Later on I realized it was flares the military used to light up a combat zone; and they would become one of my favorite 'toys' to play with. As soon as we landed I was not thinking straight from lack of sleep and nervousness, then a thought suddenly occurred to me, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY, I'M 19 YEARS OLD". I left California on August 20th and this is the next day, the 21st. Then I thought... Is this yesterday or tomorrow where I'm at, did we cross the date line, did I miss my birthday, oh who cares, I have more to worry about than that anyway. One of the very first things that happened after getting off the plane, we were given a bologna sack sandwich, one HUGE orange pill along with two great big chalky white horse pills and a half pint of orange juice to wash them down. We we never told what those pill were for until much later when we had to start talking those big white chalky white pills weekly [malaria pills]. Any pill hangs up in the back of my throat and I never took one again, I got lucky.

  25. Wisdom is the insight of knowledge, insight into the secrets and mysteries of life. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:7 that wisdom is the principal thing, the capital you need for whatever you want to achieve in life: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Notice that it doesn’t stop at enjoining you to get wisdom; it goes further to say, “Along with wisdom, get understanding.” Spiritual understanding is just as important as wisdom in building a successful life. You may have the wisdom to start something, but you need understanding to establish it, and then knowledge of how to make consistent progress from glory to glory. In Colossians 1:9 the Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, prayed for us to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Knowledge here is exact or full knowledge of God. Through this kind of knowledge, you make your life glorious: your life (the house) is filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Wisdom, understanding, and knowledge go together. You need all three to be effective, and to live the extraordinary life of success, dominion, victory and excellence that God has ordained for you.

  27. Mabel, you are so right. More than anything, the West must understand the cost that Jesus bore for us. I have shared many stories about this. It is beautiful that God has given us this fellowship, but God may have given us each a purpose being here as well. I truly believe you have hit on this one that I have embraced so much. Persecution strengthens the Body of Christ and brings to real and genuine intimacy how Jesus wants us to be with one another. I would certainly recommend reading the free book by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, "Tortured For Christ." Not only is it true and compelling, but Richard shared the very same thing you did: "How will I know if I am able"? It is not up to us to withstand persecution, but Christ in us who said to Paul, "My strength is made perfect in weakness." That is the whole key. And Paul responded, "Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ's power may rest on me." My heart has been changed significantly by reading not only that book, but six of his other books. He loved his torturers, and many were converted to Christ. Jesus said to his followers, "No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my Name, for they do not know the One who sent me." Persecution and being a Christian cannot be separated. Persecution is not always physical, but it can be. I ask myself, "Am I even worthy enough to suffer for Christ's sake"? Am I afraid? Yes. Humanly, I am. But I must rest upon my faith that Jesus will give me what I need at the time it is required. God bless you for sharing your concern. ❤

  29. There is nothing at all wrong with you expressing your thoughts to your husband. It's okay to to tell him you think it's not wise to stop treatments when he has such a good prognosis. Give yourself some margin for being human, and give your husband the same margin. You're both in a difficult situation right now, and both of you are being bombarded by a large spectrum of emotions. Be encouraged, knowing that what you're feeling is normal in your circumstances. Feed on the Word of God, and revisit some the posts in this thread. There's lots of encouragement for you here. And like @Coliseum said, keeping praying and don't give up praying- asking, seeking, and knocking. We are still praying for you and your husband.

  30. We are praying with you. Don't give up. We are lost without the Lord Luke 18:1-6 (NIV) 1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' 4 "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'" 6 And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says." Jesus really means what he says. We must believe him.

  32. The Marine corps were largely up north, I corps, near the DMZ. I was in amtracks, amphibious, would go most terrains/water. As an untrained platoon Sgt, I worried a lot, extra hyper vigilant, unwanted responsibilities. At the Dong Ha river, mortars and rockets showed up often enough to set your watches by. I was always having to get the guys to fill more and more sand bags. A nearby hole to jump in. Even in the Nam, I used my carpentry skills, and took used ammo crates and made a wooden square fox hole with floor. No mud! Great, right. God was with me even before He made Himself to dwell in me. One night shouts of incoming got everybody grabbing rifles and manning the 50's, popping illuminations and jumping in our holes. For whatever reason,*, this night I jumped over my wood bunker and dived behind a close previous rocket crater to be with a buddy. When morning came around and the sun came up, I was going around to check up on any casualties (none), when I passed by my wood foxhole, I just stared for awhile and got down and looked close. Apparently, a rocket round hit right beside it, caved it in squeezing the sides completely together, and was full of shrapnel holes and fragments. Some dude snapped a shot of me staring at the hole, and I still have the picture. * God had a better plan for me. *

  33. I spent the last 14 or so months getting treatment for cancer. Chemo is miserable. She may experience "chemo brain" which means her mind will be dulled and she wont think too clearly. Be patient with her. She may feel awful, sicker than she has ever been before. She may feel humiliated by how weak and sick she is, by the side effects and by how much help she needs. She may get distressed by the changes in her body. Losing my hair was the easy part for me, compared to 50 pounds of water weight in my legs, mouth sores, changes in taste so that all food and drink was revolting. She may feel like she is a burden since she cant be a caregiver but instead needs to be cared for herself. Be patient. Be kind. Be supportive. I remember crying the first time I got a card from someone. I was feeling isolated at the time and the card showed me someone cared. Let her see that you care. Not that she is a burden. She will need all the love she can get. Cancer is an emotional and spiritual battle as much as it is a physical battle.

  37. I was in the Navy in those days. We deployed to the Middle East twice, GITMO once and to South America once. While deployed along the coast of Africa heading back and forth to the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, we were issued the same orange pills you mentioned. We also had to eat large salt tablets because of the oppressive desert heat. When we had shore leave in parts of the Middle East we were told to avoid areas outside of certain cities that were occupied by Beduin folk. They didn't care much for us 'unbelievers'. I was enlisted in the Navy and found myself in the desert of Saudi Arabia doing guard duty with a member of the Saudi military. Meanwhile a friend of mine enlisted in the Army and was assigned river boat duty in the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam. Life is strange. The Lord saved us from getting wacked by two, count 'em two, hurricanes while sailing home down the east coast of Africa toward the Cape of Good Hope. As we sailed south, seas around us were mostly calm. Everywhere else, both north and south of our track, was devastating storm and terrible seas. It was so miraculous that our Captain, a declared atheist, admitted during an address to the crew that it nearly made him a believer in God. I later learned that the man wasn't a career Navy man at all. He was a CIA agent embedded in our command structure. During our deployment to the Persian Gulf and western Indian Ocean he directed our ship and one other in an attempt to create an incident with the Russian Navy off the coast of Dijouti near the Horn of Africa. This was attempted twice with both attempts failing. I later learned the entire operation was being observed in a War Room in Japan. I am very glad the Lord directed me to pray throughout the deployment for our safety. To this day, I believe the operation failed because of Divine Providence. Many good men would have died if it had succeeded as the waters at that time were infested with sharks and poisonous jelly fish so numerous you could almost walk to shore by stepping on their jelly-ish backs. I am alive today along with many men because of the mercy and grace and direct intervention of God - in spite of the errant efforts of our own government to kill us all. Praise God for His mercy. that's me, hollering from the choir loft...

  38. A typical day would start off by having to be at the Mess Hall by 4:00 A.M. to get our only hot meal of the day. We were issued two boxes of "C Rations" to sustain us for the rest of the day. I'm here to tell ya, if you've never ate any military C rations, you're lucky. I was stationed at a place called, Plantation, Viet Nam. I was a crew chief and M-60 machine gun door gunner on a UH-1C Huey assault helicopter, our platoon was called the "Sidewinders'. After breakfast we would have to walk down to the flight line and prepare the UH-1C assault gunship for its mission. Load the ammo for the mini guns and M-60 machine guns, load and insert the rockets and make sure we were ready to fire up when the pilots arrived to do their pre flight. I was a crew chief and M-60 door gunner. We would then lift off to our destination about an hours flight time to a place called Tay Ninh. This is where we waited to be called for aerial combat and support missions. Long stretches of boredom were the norm waiting to be called upon. Well, everyone is getting hungry, so it's time to try and choke down some C rations [keep in mind I'm a newbie]. Those rations are extra nasty if you try to gag them down cold. There are many ways to heat these rations up, but the fastest and most efficient is the following. One of the pilots fires up the helicopter, and each in turn puts on his nomex gloves, grabs a pair of pliers and grabs the can by the lip, puts it directly behind the T53-L-13 turbine engine exhaust at flight idle, opens the can and starts gagging it down. Do you see where this is heading Finally it's my turn and I do the same thing BUT; I like mine a little extra hot. Spent the next hour cleaning beanies & weenies off me and the aircraft. The military law of pressurized vessels and explosions surfaced its ugly head to wear food. When we got back that evening or late as night, depending on what involvement we had that day; our day was just beginning. If fired, all our weapons had to be cleaned and lubricated, preventive maintenance and oil samples / inspections performed. If we took any hits or damage, that had to be repaired or replaced immediately to return to service. Next chat: What M-60 machine gun fired brass does to a helicopter tail rotor from the left side. P.S. The Tay Ninh International Air Port sign is a joke. The runway is only a thousand feet long and constructed of PSP.

You had me thinking that you shot at a general and colonel when you wrote "issued the challenge" and "the general supplied yet another incorrect password" ; then you got kicked out of the service, and that's why you were now here on Worthy. You and Dennis have a real knack for storytelling. Funny and entertaining stuff for sure. I was asked to read the Psalms by a military vet with failing eyesight; I would spend many days doing this. I did not really enjoy the Psalms at the time but it helped me later. Did you consider writing a small book, maybe: "funny stories from the combat zone -or Grace under Fire"( maybe include you are born of God and maybe include a Psalm after each story and a verse from Christ. The World English Bible is free to download and free to copy; there are a couple of other public domain Bibles also as you know.)Authentic funny stuff sells well. I am sure one publisher will take it. We need your stories in these contentious times. One of the best selling books ever I heard was Chicken Soup for the Soul(Not recommending it). I haven't read it -I think it's a compilation of "other peoples" inspirational stories by two authors; but it seems they had to ask 110 publishers before one agreed to publish.

  45. I think this. Those who argue against the law (why do they bother) probably have not read it or understood why it was given and for what purpose. Thus I see they do not realize how Yeshua completes it while upholding it. Yeshua does not replace it, He embodies it. It is a schoolmaster, a guide, a set of reasons and ideas that show us the Heart of a Holy God. How else will will know Him? By the word of some odd theology that the preacher spoke? Some man-ology that ignores the Tanakh? I think not.
