  1. It seems a bit odd to think so little of a very giving people. I mean to say that America as a country and a people give and give and give. Google this speech set to music in 1973: The Americans: A Canadian's Opinion By Gordon Sinclair If they give to the poor in Haiti why does that not count? You said yourself that you do not ask for money but you want to pin blame on "Christian America" because they do not help - could it be that you have not because you ask not? I personally do give to those who hold signs on the street because they ask - even though I suspect that many may not truly need it. I can not be sure and Jesus said to give to him that asks. I waffled over this type of giving for a while until my friend told me that his son had asked him the question, "Why don't we give to the poor on the street?" and he could not really justify not giving. So we both have decided that it is Christian to give in that situation. It is interesting that you mention digging for cans in the garbage. A brother that attends our church - only on Sunday mornings testified that while standing in a dumpster (looking for cans) he witnessed to a stranger. After this testimony my wife and I decided we would save our cans and give them to him. What is interesting is that this same brother has simply asked me at different times for gas money to get home with. So, I give. If he didn't say he needed it I would not be aware of his need. Perhaps, I am not spiritual enough to have the Lord reveal the need to me but I know it now, so I give to him and his wife, even if not asked. As for what people think: I think digging for cans is a low paying job but an honest job nonetheless. Which leads me to wonder, why many of those you mention in great need do ask for help? American Christians are always thought of as shallow and spoiled (which you can find whatever you are looking for in America) but can you agree that this message board is full of knowledgeable Christians and I don't think of them as shallow and I further assume the best of my brethren - that they do give. Giving should be done humbly and with simplicity. I would actually be offended if someone started a thread titled, "How much do you give?" Let us consider another common American trait - pride. How many Americans are poor and are too proud to scale down their lifestyle when their financial situation calls for it. You mentioned it as though it would be wrong for people to expect us to sell our excess. To have a love of money doesn't mean someone is rich. I hope I don't sound heartless, I am just a little sensitive to accusations about my fellow countrymen. I do construction for residential customers and I have met hundreds of people, 80% plus in my estimation are considerate and well behaved. Oddly enough, some very wealthy folks are the most generous and kind people I have ever met. In my ten years of doing this I guess there was about 30 people total that were just mean and selfish. Of course this is just my perception and it is not scientific but I find it hard to think so harshly against Americans especially when they are Christians. I will pray for your situation - and even at that I would not have known if you had not told me.
  2. There are many good posts here. Lots of good stuff. I can only add a smidgen to this. It is important to note that conviction and condemnation are two separate things. I think they were already covered but I'll put it in my own way. Conviction is being convinced or persuaded in the truth. Condemnation is referring to the punishment phase of judgment. If our heart for instance says, "Well, my sin is too great, it's over now. God will surely consider me reprobate and refuse to help me." This would be a condemnation that would make it very difficult to pray under. But we are comforted that God is greater than our heart's evaluation and beside that He knows everything. He knows we are but flesh and considers our frailty, I think it is for this that his mercies are new everyday. So, even under our heart's condemnation, we can go in repentance to God. And it would certainly be to our advantage if we were not under condemnation but rather knowing we have been walking a good walk with the Lord. This may be an old saying WyGuy but it's new to me and I like it: "An unbeliever leaps into sin and loves it, but a Christian falls into sin and loathes it."
  3. Think of Charity is a 'love that gives'. Also, God is Love, that's the 'love' that charity is. I love these sayings: You can give without loving but you can't love without giving. and Lust can't wait to take but love can wait to give.
  4. When we die our spirit returns to God our bodies return to dust. Absent from the body present with the Lord. I believe it because that's what I understand from the Bible. How do I know it is true? Well it is my hope but I could not prove it beyond that. I do take note of supposed after death experiences and they seem to concur with the Bible, but these reports must be scrutinized to hearsay.
  5. He has come to be thee example of what it means to be a part of the family of God. John 1:1, Col1:15-17, John 17:1-5, 14:7 These scriptures are pertty clear as to who Christ is, was, and forever will be! Look whos talking! Mr Nonbeliever remove your blinders and ear plugs please! God came to this earth as a human. This man was to be a suitable sacrifice for the sins of man. During the time between His birth and death He lived as our example since those who were suppose to be repersenting God were failing horriably. One of the main reason He was put on the cross was because He claimed to be the Son of God. In Jewish culture at that time, to claim to be the Son of God was to declare equality with God, and to them this was blasphemy. Jesus knew who He was and the consequence of that claim. Why would He say those things if it were not true. He was either a crazy man or He was in fact who He claim to be, God in the flesh. As the God/man, He, because he became a man, took on a lower form then what He had before He came to earth to our sacrifice and example. [human]. Because he existed as a man he understood the need to pray. Because He knew who He was as a man He prayed. Because He knew what it would take to follow God as a man, He prayed. He prayed to God to be our example of what is nessesary in order to live for God [relationship]. But since you don't accept the reality of the Trinity, you wil never grasp the relationship between God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. They are ONE! I agree with most of this and would further state that holding the faith that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh is the essence of being a Christian. My only hang up is the TERM "trinity" and the perceived multiple personages of God. But let me make this clear that Christianity is to believe Christ IS the one true God in human form; which I agree with.
  6. You state an obvious truth. Jesus Christ is not God. He prayed to God as we do. He didn't do his own will, he was sent and the sender is greater The father is greater than I. He was born, that was his genesis,; beginning. He set aside his own will, he said why does thou call me good, there is none good save one, that is God Matt 27:18 all authority is GIVEN to me in heaven and earth. If he was God why did it have to be given to him? in 1 cor 15:20-25 or so after God has put all under Christ then Christ returns subject to God that God may be all in all. People run with blinders on to a few pet verses they do not understand, desperately clinging to those few misunderstood verses to substantiate what someone told them as kids. Don't believe the lie of the trinity. Trinity, triune, 3 in one etc etc. and all the terms used to describe them are made up and not biblical. Gods word is so clearly obvious but you'd never know that with all the wrong doctrine that is believed out there. Anyone out there awake? Then do tell what you understand concerning Jesus the man?
  7. He first comes as a sacrificial lamb but then as a lion.
  8. I think the idea of intolerant reign or dictatorial rule is what is meant - but I heard it said that the rod of iron represents capital punishment which correlates nicely with it.
  9. I am not saying this is necessarily wrong but I am curious as to how you arrived at this revelation? Also, why is it possible to stretch the imagination to say that 'three are not more than one yet they are plural' but to reasonably understand that one means one is heretical? Why is revelation greater than reason and why can't they coexist? Should we suspend all reason and say that God the Son prayed to God the Father and yet they are not more than one? If one were to pray to God the Holy Spirit would the others be offended? Shouldn't the God that made us be able to reveal something reasonably? "Saying they are two beings would be polytheism and would also be wrong." Why is it acceptable to use a plural pronoun and even the number three to refer to "them" and yet to "say they are two beings" is like sinful? I am sure some may think I am being glib or even disrespectful or worse, but to fling the accusation of heresy without rebut seems irresponsible to me. So, don't be offended just explain your position.
