  1. I’m sure that the Christian scholars who wrote the NRSV were and are equally competent as are the scholars of other translations that also emit the word ‘begotten’. Also added with the fact that neither Zakariya, John, Jesus and Mary (peace be upon them) claimed this AND that Jesus (peace be upon him) said that the greatest commandment was to accept the ONE God all lead to the inevitable conclusion that the NRSV writers got it right. The fact that the King may have given directions that he wanted the best and most accurate translation possible clearly shows it didn’t work as the 47 scholars may have had a mind-set that led them in the direction they went which was subsequently removed. Taking 7 years again would not have made a difference and is irrelevant. The fact it was exhaustive has clearly not been exhaustive enough. Few there may have been, but the issue is central to Christianity and not a minor issue. It goes to the heart of Christian belief. Most of us? Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord: Israel is my firstborn son. Exodus 4:22 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. When he commits iniquity, I will punish him with a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings. 2 Samuel 7:13-14 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Jeremiah 31:9 son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God. Luke 3:38 You are children of the Lord your God. You must not lacerate yourselves or shave your forelocks for the dead. Deuteronomy 14:1 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. Romans 8:14 See also John 1:12, Philippians 2:15, 1 John 3:1-2, Job 38:7, Job 2:1, Job 1:6, Genesis 6:4 and Genesis 6:2. If being born of a woman means as you say in layman’s terms, what does that make Adam (peace be upon him) in layman’s terms? I do not doubt the virgin birth, but this does not make Jesus (peace be upon him) according to the 4 man-made gospels the ‘begotten son of God. We should rejoice that the ONE God exists and has always existed and will always exist. As I have already said that the fact that neither Zakariya, John, Jesus and Mary (peace be upon them) claimed the ‘begottenship’ AND that Jesus (peace be upon him) said that the greatest commandment was to accept the ONE God all lead to the inevitable conclusion that the NRSV writers got it right.
  2. shiloh357, according to wikipedia It is claimed that Arian arguments that used texts that refer to Christ as God's "only begotten Son" are based on a misunderstanding of the Greek word monogenēs and that the Greek word does not mean "begotten" in the sense we beget children but means "having no peer, unique". OneLight, there are other English translations that also do not contain the word 'begotten'. I can cite them if you like. If Jesus (peace be upon him) tells us to accept the ONE God, why are Christians going on a path that is contrary to this? It's also worrying when English translations differ in the frequency of the word 'begotten' which is so central to the Christian faith.
  3. But it doesn’t appear in the 4 man-made Greek gospels. That is the title of the thread. In the bible there are only 8 occurrences of the word ‘begotten’. Some of the verses you quoted are incorrect based on a correct translation e.g. The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years; and he had other sons and daughters. Genesis 5:4 Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a sucking child, to the land that you promised on oath to their ancestors’? Numbers 11:12 Etc. etc. Hence my question still remains unanswered, which is why is the word ‘begotten’ not appear in the 4 man-made Greek gospels of the NT?
  4. FresnoJoe, the translation of Psalms 2:6-8 in the NRSV does not contain the word ‘begotten’. kwikphilly, the uniqueness of Jesus (peace be upon him) is the fact that he had a mother and no father, hence one of a kind. Also in Hebrews 11:17 in the NRSV does not contain the word ‘begotten’. I agree, but it depends what you mean. Read below. It’s because it doesn’t appear in the Greek, nothing to do with every day use. After all its Christian scholars that have thrown the word out after much debate. Blueminou, Psalm 2:7 does not contain the word ‘begotten’ in the NRSV! Ezra, the Christian scholars did not use the word ‘begotten’ in the NSRV as they deemed it not be the correct translation, hence the word ‘only son’. Really? But if you believe in the 4 gospels then you need to read them correctly and not make things up according to your own desires. Reformed Baptist. But I was looking for the equivalent word for ‘begotten’ in the 4 Greek gospels and not to be found. Here are the verses you referenced. Using the NRSV, can you point out where the word ‘begotten’ appears? The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:18 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:18 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. Luke 7:12 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. Luke 8:42 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. Luke 9:38 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, Hebrews 11:17 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9 If it was and is common belief that the then why add the word ‘begotten’ in the first place? In my opinion it was a deliberate attempt to deceive the readers of the 4 Gospels to think that Jesus (peace be upon him) was something that he was not and claimed to be. In fact neither did Zakariya, John or Mary (peace be upon them) ever declared that Jesus (peace be upon him) was the ‘begotten’ son of God. May God forgive me for saying such a thing. Lastly, let us see what Jesus (peace be upon him) did say. “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:29 He talks about the ONE God as Moses (peace be upon him) said in the past and other prophets and messengers also said. The message is exactly the same. Jesus (peace be upon him) is unique due to his birth but that’s no big deal. Adam (peace be upon him) didn’t have a mother or a father. Again no big deal as God can create as He wishes. There are a few prophets in the Bible who are referred to as the son of God, not just Jesus (peace be upon him). His message is what is important.
  5. Thanks for the welcome. Why did 50 Christian scholars of the the highest eminence and of different denominations throw the word 'begotten' out and it doesn't appear in the 4 gospels? That is the question that I am asking? Please quote which verse in the 4 gospels the word appears. Thanks Wasalaam Aziz
