What did Christ mean in Matthew 7:21-23?

'Not every one that saith unto me," Lord, Lord," .. shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; .... but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, .. "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? .... and in thy name have cast out devils? ...... and in thy name done many wonderful works?" And then will I profess unto them, .. "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."' (Matthew 7:21) Hello @Pollycy, These verses are not intended to make comfortable reading. They were intended to cause those listening to stop and consider. So it is no wonder that we feel uncomfortable with them. These are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ while on earth, but the epistles, written by His Apostles, are equally from Him and of equal value with the words which were spoken by Him while on earth. He made it quite clear, also that He spoke only what He heard from the Father: His words are spirit and they are life. The believer in the Lord Jesus Christ has no reason to fear these words in Matthew 7, for they will never apply to him. For He is accepted in the Beloved, and declared to be Holy and without blame before the Father, not because of any righteousness of his own, but because of the righteousnes imputed to Him by God, on the basis of the finished work of Christ, who paid the penalty for our sin, by dying in our place. There are those who give verbal assent to the things of God, but whose hearts are far from Him, and He is not deceived concerning their hearts condition. He knows those who are His. You are His workmanship Polly, and greatly loved. In Christ Jesus Chris

    'That ye may know'

'Wherefore I also, .. after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, .... and love unto all the saints, ...... Cease not to give thanks for you, ........ making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, .. may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation .... in the knowledge of Him: ...... The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; ........ that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, .......... and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, .. according to the working of His mighty power, which He wrought in Christ, .... when He raised Him from the dead, ...... and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, ........ Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, .......... and every name that is named, ............ not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under His feet, .. and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, .... which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.' (Ephesians 1:15-23) Hello there, The epistle of Ephesians was written to those who already knew the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord: in it they learn of the Headship of Christ over the Church which is His Body; which is the fulness of Him, that filleth all in all; and learn in it's first chapter of their standing, as members of that company, before God - in His beloved Son. Thus enlightened, this prayer is prayed, that they may go on to 'know' and 'acknowledge' the truths sought by means of this prayer. For this they would need the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, for this knowledge can only be known by revelation from above, for it is spiritually discerned. How we need to pray this prayer, and that of Ephesians 3:14-21 for ourselves and for all who have been enlightened concerning the Church of the One Body, of which Christ is the Head. Yet, there are so many, who although having been enlightened regarding their need of a Saviour, have never entered into the knowledge of their standing before God in Christ, or know of the calling, hope and inheritance of those who are members of the Church of the One Body of which Christ is the Head, let alone the hope of His calling, and of His inheritance in the saints. How we need to read God's Word, and acknowledge the change that took place in His administration of the Church in Christ, with the laying aside of Israel in unbelief (temporarily) at the end of the Acts period: which necessitated it; and the unique nature of these further epistles of Paul which contain the knowledge of the fellowship of the mystery, which had been previously hid in God (Eph. 3:9), and was made known by revelation to Paul: in order to make it known - as it's Steward: in Eph. Phil. Col. 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon. In Christ Jesus our risen and glorified, Saviour, Lord and Head. Chris
  4. 'Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, .. "Why do ye look one upon another?" And he said, .. "Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: .... get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; ...... that we may live, and not die." And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. .. But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; .... for he said, "Lest peradventure mischief befall him."' (Genesis 42:1-4) Praise God!

    Seasons Greetings

'Praise God for His unspeakable gift' - (2 Corinthians 9:15) 'And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.' (Eccl.3:13) 'Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.' (Eccl.5:19) 'Jesus answered and said unto her, "If thou knewest the gift of God, and Who it is that saith to thee, 'Give me to drink'; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water."' (John 4:10) 'For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.' (Rom. 6:23) 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:' (Eph. 2:8) 'Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.' 7. 'And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. .. And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: .... and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. ...... And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: ........ and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, "Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do." .......... And the famine was over all the face of the earth: ............ And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; .............. and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. ................ And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.' (Gen 41:53-57) Praise God! - A mighty God and a Saviour.
  8. 'And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, .. and in the eyes of all his servants. .... And Pharaoh said unto his servants, ...... "Can we find such a one as this is, ........ a man in whom the Spirit of God is?" And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, .. "Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, .... there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: ...... Thou shalt be over my house, ........ and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: .......... only in the throne will I be greater than thou." And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, .. "See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt." And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, .. and put it upon Joseph's hand, .... and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, ...... and put a gold chain about his neck; ........ And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; .......... and they cried before him, "Bow the knee": ............ and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, .. "I am Pharaoh, and without thee .... shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.' And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; .. and he gave him to wife Asenath .... the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. .. And Joseph was thirty years old .... when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. ...... Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, ........ and went throughout all the land of Egypt.' (Gen 41:37-46) Praise God! 'And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age,' (Luk 3:23) * Zaphnathpaaneah: Jerome says this name signified in Egyptian, Savatorem mundi, "the Saviour of the world;" The 'world' to Pharoah, being Egypt, of which Joseph could clearly have been considered it's Saviour in that day.
  9. 'When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, .. he said unto Joseph, "I also was in my dream, and, behold, .... I had three white baskets on my head: ...... And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; ........ and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head." And Joseph answered and said, .. "This is the interpretation thereof: .... The three baskets are three days: ...... Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, ........ and shall hang thee on a tree; .......... and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee." And it came to pass the third day, .. which was Pharaoh's birthday, .... that he made a feast unto all his servants: ...... and he lifted up the head of the chief butler ........ and of the chief baker among his servants. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; .. and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: .... But he hanged the chief baker: ...... as Joseph had interpreted to them. ........ Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.' (Genesis 40:16-23) Praise God! Everything will be accomplished in His time and in His way.
  10. 'And Joseph said unto him, .. "This is the interpretation of it: .... The three branches are three days: ...... Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, ........ and restore thee unto thy place: .......... and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, ............ after the former manner when thou wast his butler. But think on me when it shall be well with thee, .. and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, .... and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, ...... and bring me out of this house: ........ For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: .......... and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon."' (Genesis 40:12-15) Praise God!
  11. 'And it came to pass, .. when his master heard the words of his wife, .... which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; .. that his wrath was kindled. And Joseph's master took him, .. and put him into the prison, .... a place where the king's prisoners were bound: ...... and he was there in the prison.' (Genesis 39:19-20) Praise God!
  12. 'And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, That she called unto the men of her house, .. and spake unto them, saying, .... "See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; ...... he came in unto me to lie with me, ........ and I cried with a loud voice: .......... And it came to pass, ............ when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, .............. that he left his garment with me, ................ and fled, and got him out." And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, "The Hebrew servant, .. which thou hast brought unto us, .... came in unto me to mock me: ...... And it came to pass, ........ as I lifted up my voice and cried, .......... that he left his garment with me, and fled out.' (Gen 39:13-18) Praise God!
  13. 'And it came to pass, .. as she spake to Joseph day by day, .... that he hearkened not unto her, ...... to lie by her, ........ or to be with her. And it came to pass about this time, .. that Joseph went into the house to do his business; .... and there was none of the men of the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me:" .. and he left his garment in her hand, .... and fled, ...... and got him out.' (Gen 39:10-12) Praise God!
  14. 'And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; .. and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, .... captain of the guard, an Egyptian, ...... bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, ........ which had brought him down thither. And the LORD was with Joseph, .. and he was a prosperous man; .... and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, .. and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. .... And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, ...... that, behold, his brother came out: ........ and she said, "How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee:" .......... therefore his name was called Pharez. ............ And afterward came out his brother, .............. that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: ................ and his name was called Zarah.' (Genesis 38:27-30) Praise God!
