  1. “The Law was given so that sin might increase”.....another Rara Avis ( rare bird) seldom heard. please note that these verses are meant to be used for interesting and lively discussion.I do not throw these verses out there to encourage sin in any way , shape or form. John.....if this was not the line of thinking you wanted to explore , let me know and I will start another thread.
  2. Hi John.....Here is another ignored verse.....”ALL things are lawful, not all things are expedient” Here is another....” You are to share in ALL good things with He that delivered the Gospel to you” One more.Legalists don’t like it.....What is the will of God? “ BELIEVE in the One that He sent” Sorry.....just one more. “ Sin Boldly”......oops.....that one came from someplace else.
  3. The answer to these types of questions can be found in the Book Of Job. SPOILER ALERT! God does not think He should have to answer to us. It’s none of our business. He’ll do as He desires and does not answer to us.As He so eloquently asked—— “ Where were YOU when I hung the stars? Seeing how this planet is the Domain of Satan, it is a miracle that ANYTHING good happens. Can we at least set aside our ignorance for a moment and thank our Maker for that?
  4. Please......never leave me hanging like that again......lol. Were it not for you and your encouragement , I would have got discouraged and left a long time ago......Some here might cuss you for that encouragement....lol. Anyway—-Thanks a ton and may God continue to bless you.I would be amiss if I did not also mention Yowm, another one of us brilliant thinkers.....haha!
  5. When somebody submits ideas that are simply “ Hogwash”, I must assume they came from a source that was Hogwash. The remark was a failed attempt at humor.....it was not a slam on the Bible. I used to be an atheist and then God gave me “ ears to hear” for no reason other than His Grace is truly Amazing.
  6. Jesus used that phrase to describe those that go to Hell......just another way to say that they “ were none of His”......it refers to those that just did not get it,probably those who want to talk about themselves and all the good works they did,not having the wisdom to discern that it was all about what HE did FOR them. Some just insist on getting all the accolades- Jesus is like that.
  7. The tongue has been compared to the rudder of a ship.So small in comparison to the rest of the ship, yet capable of sinking it if not controlled.......” rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of a wise man brings healing”
  8. Forgot to mention this little dilly.....a friend of mine witnessed this—- some guy wanted to know if he could buy dog food with his food stamps .When the request was refused, the guy simply bought a bunch of steaks to feed his pets.Lovely.
  9. I used to work with a person who gave up a $35 per hour job to get on disability .She had no disability at all. Her family which included dozens of uncles, aunts and cousins all sit on their rear ends and the benefits just keep rolling in. This has been going on for generations now, and I am telling you these types have all this stuff down to a SCIENCE! I can’t speak for others, but here in the Southern Ohio area this kind of robbery is epidemic.I want the poor people taken care of. I have a big heart for anyone who is disabled and can’t provide for themselves and their families.I guess it’s just another case of “ no good deed goes unpunished”. Some people have no shame.
  10. Check out Chapter 6, verse 17 from the Book Of Hogwash
  11. I vastly underestimated the strength and loyalty of the Sheep Lobby. That was stupid of me—- baaaaaaa..
  12. Here is what usually happens. All of your relatives will, hate you because you gave them no money,or not enough money.Your friends will hate you for these same reasons. You will quit your job . After a while you will get bored. Then you will make dumb decisions, like if you are a golfer you might decide to buy a golf course. You will discover your millions don’t mean crap in the world of business and you wind up bankrupt .Check out the true life stories .Your odds of finding happiness after a sudden fortune are as remote as hitting a power- ball.
  13. Only if you believe in what God has to say about it.
  14. Pauls claim was valid until Jan 1953.....
  15. .....I should clarify my response.....IN THE END, God will get what he ultimately wants......to be surrounded by those who love and worship Him.....Satan and his Co-horts and all unbelievers will be defeated eternally .I thought this was what you meant.....It is obvious that He puts up with a lot of things on a minute-by-minute basis that both sadden and anger Him......HIS DAY will arrive soon , and it will be glorious for God Himself and all of those that trusted Him.....The rest? He NEVER knew them.....It was God’s will that none should have perished, but most do and I see nowhere in scripture that God is wringing His hands over any of them at the Great White Throne Judgement.......Turn to God( repent) and believe Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead after three days to live eternally in His presence.
  16. Sabbathing ( resting from ALL work) in the finished work of the Cross Is the only Sabbath that matters for those in the Body of Christ.
  17. I have heard from very reliable sources ( it may have been Zola Levitt) that the outstanding characteristic of being a sheep is to be incredibly stupid......pretty much sums up the human race for me.....lol
  18. Ya just can’t beat good, ol’fashioned snapping turtle for this time of year .....make sure you use a pressure cooker!
  19. God is getting exactly what He wants......worship from those that He has given the freedom not to .What would YOU want if you had the power to get anything? One could create a universe where everybody liked them.Perhaps create a universe where everybody even loved them! But to create a universe where everybody that truly knew you worshipped you, wow—- what could be greater than that? The problem of course is that this worship must be earned.Satan was willing to give the entire Earth to Jesus in turn for a little “ worship”.Only Jesus had the love to sacrifice Himself for us . He did not have to do it and we most certainly did not deserve. His love for us and His unfathomable courage to “ drink of the cup” that God required of Him for our sake was what earned Him our worship. That and a million other things.I am very eager to fall at His feet.
  20. Agreed.......just curious.....do we do these good works to be saved or to keep ourselves saved? I believe good works done prior to Salvation in order to be saved are like “ filthy rags”. Good works after Salvation and especially those done in secret will be rewarded at the Bema Seat Of Christ. What do you think?
  21. “Striving” sounds a lot like “ working”. I prefer “ resting” in His finished work at the Cross. Will simply believing the Gospel found in 1Cor15:1-4 be enough to save me?Striving for perfection is a worthy goal as long as one realizes it is not to be done in order to be saved.Adding to the Gospel is a dangerous thing.Faith plus nothing for Salvation.
  22. The Book Of Proverbs teach...” Sudden money is a curse, and not to be wished for”...... if you don’t believe that, check out the misery that follows those big winners.....
  23. I thought the following article was interesting. It made sense to me.what do you guys think? Question: "What is progressive revelation as it relates to salvation?" Answer: The term “progressive revelation” refers to the idea and teaching that God revealed various aspects of His will and overall plan for humanity over different periods of time, which have been referred to as “dispensations” by some theologians. To dispensationalists, a dispensation is a distinguishable economy (i.e., an ordered condition of things) in the outworking of God’s purpose. Whereas dispensationalists debate the number of dispensations that have occurred through history, all believe that God revealed only certain aspects of Himself and His plan of salvation in each dispensation, with each new dispensation building upon the prior one. While dispensationalists believe in progressive revelation, it is important to note that one does not have to be a dispensationalist to embrace progressive revelation. Nearly all students of the Bible recognize the fact that certain truths contained in Scripture were not fully revealed by God to prior generations. Anyone today who does not bring an animal sacrifice with him when he wishes to approach God or who worships on the first day of the week rather than the last understands that such distinctions in practice and knowledge have been progressively revealed and applied throughout history. In addition, there are weightier matters concerning the concept of progressive revelation. One example is the birth and composition of the Church, which Paul speaks of: “I, Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (Ephesians 3:1-6). Paul states nearly the same thing in Romans: “Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:25-26). In discussions of progressive revelation, one of the first questions people have is how it applies to salvation. Were those living before the first advent of Christ saved in a different way than people are saved today? In the New Testament era, people are told to place their faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ and believe that God raised Him from the dead, and they will be saved (Romans 10:9-10; Acts 16:31). Yet Old Testament expert Allen Ross notes, “It is most improbable that everyone who believed unto salvation [in the Old Testament] consciously believed in the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” John Feinberg adds, “The people of the Old Testament era did not know that Jesus was the Messiah, that Jesus would die, and that His death would be the basis of salvation.” If Ross and Feinberg are correct, then what exactly did God reveal to those who lived before Christ, and how were the Old Testament saints saved? What, if anything, changed in the salvation of the Old Testament to the salvation of the New Testament? Progressive Revelation - Two Ways or One Way of Salvation? Some charge that those holding to progressive revelation espouse two different methods of salvation—one that was in place before the first coming of Christ, and another that came after His death and resurrection. Such a claim is refuted by L. S. Chafer who writes, “Are there two ways by which one may be saved? In reply to this question it may be stated that salvation of whatever specific character is always the work of God in behalf of man and never a work of man in behalf of God. . . . There is, therefore, but one way to be saved and that is by the power of God made possible through the sacrifice of Christ.” If this is true, then how can the revelations in the Old and New Testaments concerning salvation be reconciled? Charles Ryrie sums up the matter succinctly in this way: “The basis of salvation in every age is the death of Christ; the requirement for salvation in every age is faith; the object of faith in every age is God; the content of faith changes in the various ages.” In other words, no matter when a person has lived, their salvation is ultimately dependent on the work of Christ and a faith placed in God, but the amount of knowledge a person had concerning the specifics of God’s plan has increased through the ages via God’s progressive revelation. Regarding the Old Testament saints, Norman Geisler offers the following: “In short, it appears that at most, the normative Old Testament salvific requirements (in terms of explicit belief) were (1) faith in God’s unity, (2) acknowledgment of human sinfulness, (3) acceptance of God’s necessary grace, and possibly (4) understanding that there would be a coming Messiah.” Is there evidence in Scripture to support Geisler’s claim? Consider this passage, which contains the first three requirements, in Luke’s Gospel: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:10-14). This event took place before the death and resurrection of Christ, so it clearly involves a person who has no knowledge of the New Testament gospel message as it is articulated today. In the tax collector’s simple statement (“God be merciful to me, the sinner!”) we find (1) a faith in God, (2) an acknowledgement of sin, and (3) an acceptance of mercy. Then Jesus makes a very interesting statement: He says the man went home “justified.” This is the exact term used by Paul to describe the position of a New Testament saint who has believed the gospel message and put his trust in Christ: “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). The fourth on Geisler’s list is missing in Luke’s account—the understanding of a coming Messiah. However, other New Testament passages indicate that this may have been a common teaching. For example, in John’s account of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, the woman says, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us” (John 4:25). However, as Geisler himself acknowledged, faith in Messiah was not a “must have” for Old Testament salvation. Progressive Revelation - More Evidence from Scripture A quick search of Scripture reveals the following verses in both the Old and New Testaments that support the fact that faith in God has always been the avenue of salvation: • “Then [Abraham] believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6) • “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered” (Joel 2:32) • “For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4). • “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval” (Hebrews 11:1-2). • And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Scripture plainly states that faith is the key to salvation for all people down through history, but how could God save people without their knowing of Christ’s sacrifice for them? The answer is that God saved them based on their response to the knowledge that they did have. Their faith looked forward to something that they could not see, whereas today, believers look back on events that they can see. The following graphic depicts this understanding: Scripture teaches that God has always given people enough revelation to exercise faith. Now that Christ’s work is accomplished, the requirement has changed; the “times of ignorance” are over: • “In the generations gone by He permitted all the nations to go their own ways; and yet He did not leave Himself without witness” (Acts 14:16). • “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent” (Acts 17:30). • “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over [literally “let go unpunished”] the sins previously committed” (Romans 3:25). Prior to Christ’s coming, God was foreshadowing Jesus’ death via the sacrificial system and conditioning His people to understand that sin leads to death. The Law was given to be a tutor to lead people to the understanding that they were sinners in need of God’s grace (Galatians 3:24). But the Law did not revoke the prior Abrahamic Covenant, which was based on faith; it is Abraham’s covenant that is the pattern for salvation today (Romans 4). But as Ryrie stated above, the detailed content of our faith—the amount of revelation given—has increased through the ages so that people today have a more direct understanding of what God requires of them.
  24. Great verses....Not really sure how they pertain to my post.I am talking about the futility of trying to be saved by your performance, your good works. These types of people are still lost. You are taking quotes that Paul said to the saved Followers of the Gospel, the True Believers who believed Christ died for their sins and rose from the grave and did not add their works , lest they follow an “accursed” gospel —The “perverted Gospel” That Paul warned about .I am not talking about the things Peter and Paul wrote about as part of the saved Believer’s walk of Sanctification. As far as doing “God’s Will”, that would be “ believing on the One He sent.” Faith in the Shed Blood Of That “One” is what saves. The other goodies you refer to are fulfilled to the extent that we “walk by the Spirit”—— only possible AFTER we are saved.
