  1. Do you think the wisdom behind this passage is simply dont chatter chatter through the church service. I think you might be on to a winner there. Seems to fit well.
  2. Wow I didnt expect so many responses. Thankyou all for sharing your thoughts on this one. There seems to be a little variety in peoples view of this scripture as was to be expected. I think I agree it is probably to be viewed in light of it's time and place. I dont think my Spirit agrees it's righteous to silence women in gatherings of disciples in the current time. For them not to be meddlesome and go on and on I think is applicable today as it was then. The same could be said for men too but I dont think that seems to be a biological tendency like it is for women. Thanks for your help people.
  3. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (NIV) 34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. what do you think this scripture intends to communicate to us?
  4. That's an interesting idea. How do they balance it with the bits where people are in hell though? I've never heard this idea before.
  5. I'd take you more seriously if you observed any of the instructions given. Theres nothing stopping you from observing a lot of the instructions but you still dont. I have pointed you in the right direction, my work here is done. Thanks for the conversation and your time.
  6. You claim that we should follow ALL of the instructions in the torah. BUT you dont follow the instructions of the Torah because.... they're not currently relevant. Just to clarify that is your position right? I'm presuming you dont do any of the sacrifices or offerings either?
  7. So you dont actually follow the instructions given in the Torah. I dont either. I have also found the rest of the bible points out they are no longer necessary and have been replaced. Even obsolete. I'm pleased you dont actually follow the instructions of the Torah. You should defo listen to what Jesus has to say and take your instructions from him as a Christian.
  8. Yeah it sais loads of times in the new testament we dont have to follow the torah anymore. Its obsolete. It's been replaced. Jesus is the new high priest and his new covenant replaces the old one. I was just wondering if this chap is actually living as a jew like he claims or if hes just saying you should.
  9. So you observe all the ritual washings and dietary instructions? And you observe all of the feasts obviously?
  10. You focus and follow ALL of the instructions in the Torah?
  11. Yeah I agree the NIV the gender neutral language is probably its biggest flaw to be fair. But like I said it's got to be used correctly. You cant take any of them at face value you have to look into their nuances and study with them in mind. I use a site called blue letter bible . Org if I'm not using my physical NIV. You can flip between the different versions, view the actual greek and aramaic alongside the English and till give you word definitions from the major references e.g strongs etc. You can even hear the original words if you click the right buttons. For all its flaws I still rate NIV above KJV
  12. KJV is reasonably good translation. NIV is better though. Not much in it if you're using them right though to be fair
  13. So non Christian rituals are superstitious. So are Christian and jewish rituals superstitious aswell then? What makes them different?
  14. Yeah I'm not sure what to make of the whole thing. If superstitious includes the belief in the supernatural then I'm pretty sure Christian belief in lots of things would make us superstitious. If theres something that makes Christian belief in demons and Angel's and other supernatural things different somehow , which it might be , I dont know then maybe not. I always think of things like things people do because they think they're lucky etc as superstitious but never thought much of it. Witchcraft kinda things I would have thought fall within the realm of superstition which is obviously a big no no. Maybe it depends on where you draw the line and whose definition of things you go by. I dont think I have a fully formed conviction or understanding on this one.
  15. Cheers. Clear as mud to me lol. I'm not superstitious as far as I know anyway so it doesnt make much odds to me.
  16. But you said it's a belief in the supernatural aswell though didnt you?
  17. Hang about Jesus is supernatural and so is God. Wouldn't that mean we are superstitious? We believe in something supernatural. And if we believe our bibles then we believe in the dead coming back to life, we believe in demons, we believe in spirits. We believe witchcraft exists and is evil. We believe in exorcism. We believe in supernatural blood atonement rituals. So are we superstitious if we are Christians then by our very beliefs?
  18. So when we are talking about superstition we are actually talking about either A. irrational beliefs or actions eg phobias. A fear of walking on cracks in the pavement, throwing salt over your shoulder etc. Or B. a belief or a practice of the supernatural. Any belief in the supernatural. I guess witchcraft would be the practice bit? Believing in spirits, ghosts, demons, gods or even our God would be supernatural I guess. These are the two main clumps of stuff we mean?
  19. What are we talking about when we say being superstitious?
  20. Agreed. Gods will in later days could amount to some hurt feelings amongst families. His will in earlier times calling men to kill women and children etc was likely more shocking to our modern moral compasses though I suspect. Right and wrong for non Christian's is different depending on when you live and where you live. Righteous and unrighteous according to Gods will has changed too as humanity is maturing in time. We are no longer spiritual children so our standard is higher in this time. I dont think theres much witchcraft and cults where I live in the uk. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why people do wrong. It could be external temptation , it could be demons from within, it could be our flawed nature. It seems to be a very complex thing.
  21. All people are capable of horrifying evil acts. ALL. God doesnt tell us to ignore, bury or pretend we dont all have the capacity built in for horrific cruelty and misdeeds. He tells us we are sinners, wicked and owe a debt for our inequities. BUT he tells us also that we can choose to do what is right. We can love, forgive and put others first DESPITE our potential ability to do evil. That is true goodness. Choosing the narrow path.
  22. My preferred choice is the NIV but I'm happy with kjv etc, I'm not so keen on the new living translation I think it was, it seemed to change the wording too much. I read generally with in my niv but I use a site called blue letter bible org to flip between versions and do original text word studies. You can hear the greek and Hebrew words if you click the right button on there which is nice.
  23. Thank you for your apology. It is gratefully received. My view of your personality changed over the course of our conversation. It's difficult to communicate properly through text alone. I've never looked into lilith too much though I have read the name. I am happy with our translations of our bibles. It's about as good as you could ask for really all things considered. I consider some scripture to be formed in such a way that it means different things to humanity at different times and indeed to different individuals at different times in their lives. That's what makes it a truly living word. I think this story of Adam and Eve was intended to be read ans was read differently up until a point in human history.
  24. So I think what is required in terms of becoming a christian we are maybe on the same page maybe not. I think you need to accept Jesus into your heart, follow his teachings and get baptized. And getting dipped as a baby doesnt count for me. I consider a baptism full body immersion in water of an adult that accepts Jesus as Lord and saviour and has a good solid understanding of Jesus basic teachings. So when I say a baptised disciple it's a given for me that person has accepted Jesus into their heart and followed through with a verbal commitment and understands his teachings to a basic level. And as for the quoted question.... you have said I dont consider parts of the old testament truth. I consider all of the old testament true and the entire bible truth. I consider it more likely than not that the creation story with Adam and Eve is figurative rather than literal. The lessons within being the same and just as valid. And I would think in my personal case the creation story with Adam and Eve is a unique case in that it isn't explicitly stated that its figurative. But in hindsight thousands of years later with our scientific knowledge its reasonably obvious that my body isn't made of dust, its 99 per cent water.
