  1. Re: "How did God create a female (Eve) from the male DNA of Adam's rib?" Simply put, goodbye Y-chromosome, hello duplication of X-chromosome. Re: "How did Adam and Eve successfully mate and produce offspring when, at most, they had identical DNA, and at least, they were twins?" I do not find it entirely improbable that Adam and Eve could have had very different DNA, if God had chosen to create an entirely new set of DNA for Eve instead of using Adam's. Re: "How did a snake acquire the ability to speak in human language?" Several explanations have been proposed. One is that, before the Fall, some animals, such as snakes, actually possessed great enough intelligence and the ability to talk, and that such features were removed in the Curse. Another proposal is that the serpent, controlled by Satan, was not itself the agent of the speech, but rather that Satan, controlling the serpent, spoke, either nonverbally in direct communication to the mind or verbally. Re: "Stipulating that, how did Moses and the Israelites pass through it? After all, it was substantial enough to deluge Pharaoh's army." Parted sea. Re: "If the sea was parted, how precisely was that done?" Short answer, miracle. Long answer, through some supernaturally generated force that restrained each individual molecule of H2O away from a given area, the area being the path traveled by the Israelites. Re: "How did Jesus rise from the dead, and walk around good as new, when after three days of death he would be brain dead, with decayed muscles, bloated from gasses, with blisters on his skin and with millions of dead and useless cells, including dead and useless heart and kidney cells?" The cells spontaneously begin functioning once again, synapses in the brain recommence firing, etc. The decay processes reverse instantly. Re: "How is it possible to hold all the world
  2. Wow this one runs the gambit. Which one do you pick? Do you think there could be a translation problem? Luke 14:26 (King James Version) 26If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26 (The Message) 26"Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters--yes, even one's own self!-can't be my disciple. Luke 14:26 (Amplified Bible) 26If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [[a]in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple. Luke 14:26 (Young's Literal Translation) 26`If any one doth come unto me, and doth not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple; ------------------------------------------------- I was born an American; I will live an American; I shall die an American. Daniel Webster US diplomat, lawyer, orator, & politician (1782 - 1852) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'd probably stick with the KJV with some really heavy-duty footnotes. But maybe that's just my dislike of some of the modern "paraphrases" showing through again Anyway, this sort of extreme language concept shows up in a number of Bible verses, as well as in some extrabiblical literature. A good explanatory article, brief though it is, can be found here.
  3. Yikes, that is a lot at once! Wouldn't be so bad one-at-a-time (in fact, it's a lot of fun! ), but all at once... I remember evolution in biology last year... nearly every kid in the advanced class happened to be a creationist... and the top ranks of the advanced class were the most vocal. We tried to debate the teacher a bit, and we raised a minor fuss. All of a sudden, we "didn't have time" to cover the real evolution chapter. It was sort of anticlimactic. ...we spent the last few weeks of school that year watching random movies in science class. We're working on Greek mythology in English class a bit now. (The Iliad, Oedipus Rex, Medea, and the like, mostly, with some background info thrown in.) It's taught by our student teacher. As he phrased it, he is "lucky" to have me in the class (though I torment him here and there and occasionally embarass him ) because I was really into mythology as a kid and I remember some things.
  4. This was a commonly used figure-of-speech, sort of laying down a comparison between the intensity of your love for Jesus and the intensity of your love for your family. This sort of extreme language was not meant to be taken in that rigorous literal sense of actually hating one's own family, but rather illustrating the sense of 'love them less than Me'.
