  1. Part 2. Remember that Luke recorded in his gospel that Jesus said to learn the parable of the fig tree and all the other trees. Where is this found!?!?!?!?! Judges 8:33
  2. Hi Jeff. I am sorry I don't have a brief answer to your question. I hate reading ridiculously long boring posts but this one is worth it. It's hard to avoid it but I believe it's implications were eschatological. 32 "Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door. Matthew 24:32-33 The gospels are intended to be read synoptically to understand everything that was said in that converstaion. Turn to Luke 21. Then He told them a parable: "Behold the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near. "So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. Luke 21:29-31 Jesus said to learn the parable of the fig tree and all the trees. Before we can determine who the fig tree we must look at all other accounts concerning the fig tree. Go to Luke 13. 6 And He began telling this parable: "A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. 7 "And he said to the vineyard-keeper, 'Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?' 8 "And he answered and said to him, 'Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; 9 and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.'" Luke 13:6-9 Notice that the fig tree had been planted in the vineyard. Who is the vineyard? Isaiah knew who the vineyard is so turn to Isaiah 5. 1 Let me sing now for my well-beloved A song of my beloved concerning His vineyard. My well-beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill. 2 He dug it all around, removed its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine And He built a tower in the middle of it And also hewed out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones. 3 "And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard. 4 "What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones? 5 "So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground. 6 "I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned or hoed, But briars and thorns will come up I will also charge the clouds to rain no rain on it." 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel And the men of Judah His delightful plant Thus He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress. Isaiah 5:1-7 Therefore we see that Israel is the vineyard so it cannot be the fig tree planted in the vineyard. Remember when Jesus told the parable of the landowner to the Pharisees? (Matthew 21:33-46) They were responsible for cultivating the vineyard but had seized the vineyard and killed the owner
  3. Hi Suzanne, There is a picture of a little tree, right next to a mail envelope, in the editing section before you post that allows you to insert images. ___ angela, there is no such thing as a 'perfect' church. i love my disfunctional confused congregation. God has raised me up among my brethren there to pour meal into the stew. do I face opposition? of course, that is how I know I belong there.. I am being fitted into the body there in the congregation.
  4. Leave to you to Suzanne to ask thought provoking questions!! 1. Gold is often used in the bible to illustrate that which is eternal. No matter how many times it becomes polluted you can always put it through the fire and purify it. The gold Jesus was talking about was that which is eternal. Silver is temporary and always eludes to something of temporary value. Thus, Jesus was betrayed for silver, something of temporary value. Gold however is a metal that never loses its value. It's value is eternal. The salvation through Jesus Christ is the gold He is speaking of to the Laodiceans. Salvation through Jesus Christ, like gold, has eternal value. Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy.. We must understand that Laodicea or "Peoples Opinions" will always betray Jesus for something of temporary value. Something this world has to offer of temporary value. Wealth is something of temporary value. It is the silver that betrayed Jesus then and will continue to betray Him until the Last Day. 2. This is partially covered by the previous answer. Let's look at scripture. For You have tried us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined. Psalm 66:10 It's clear and simple. Refining the gold is just what God is doing in the life of one who is born again. You refine gold because the finished product has everlasting or eternal value. This is all illustrative of the things which have already been said in plain and simple language. "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. Isaiah 48:10 6 "Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit; Through deceit they refuse to know Me," declares the LORD. 7 Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, I will refine them and assay them; For what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people? Jeremiah 9:6-7 "Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time. Daniel 11:35 "And I will bring the third part through the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name,And I will answer them; I will say, 'They are My people, 'And they will say, 'The LORD is my God.'" Zechariah 13:9 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. Malachi 3:2 ..and it goes on and on until the gold is pure. 3. Again! The reference is to the garments of salvation in Isaiah. It is not that the Laodiceans weren't saved but that they had taken off the garments of their salvation. Salvation is not lost but is rejected or trampled under foot according to Hebrews 10 by some Christians. This is the peril of falling away. I will rejoice greatly in the LORD,My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10 4. Eye salve so you may see? Because of the backslidden condition of Laodicea they are unable to understand the scriptures. Remember the foolish virgins? They needed oil in their lamps to see in the coming darkness of the night. The night is something often used in scripture to typify the Great Tribulation - the Time of Jacob's Trouble. Different liquids typify the Holy Spirit in the different aspects of His ministry such as water, oil, wine, etc. In this case Jesus is using something that was well known in that day as a remedy for the eyes. Remember each church was threatened to repent or have the lampstand removed which is yet another reference to the presence of the Holy Spirit. I'm pressed for time or I'd further expound the subject. This is most enjoyable... I need to get out of the debates and join the bible studies.
