  1. Before being quarantined here, our small group of fellow diners brought the topic of probability for the Tokyo Olympics in Japan to either be cancelled this year or postponed indefinitely. Now we are no longer allowed to enjoy a meal together to discuss issues like these and other world news concerns. The official word is now out. I'm sure it's for a good reason being COVID-19 such a problem in regions like the Orient in particular. Olympic games have been cancelled in past years due to causes of war, but this would be the first time it had to be postponed due to global pandemic. Tokyo 2020 Olympics postponed to 2021 due to coronavirus, report says International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound tells USA Today "the Games are not going to start on July 24." Gael Fashingbauer Cooper March 23, 2020 11:08 AM PDT Huge numbers of sporting events have been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And now it looks like the granddaddy of global sporting events, the Tokyo Olympic Games, set for this summer, will join them. On Monday, International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA Today that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be postponed, likely to 2021. "On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided," Pound told USA Today. "The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know." Details are yet to be worked out, the newspaper reported. When asked if Pound was speaking officially for the IOC, the organization replied only that "It is the right of every IOC member to interpret the decision of the IOC EB which was announced yesterday." That decision was the IOC announcement that the committee will study different scenarios regarding the future of the 2020 Games. That statement goes on to say the group will finalize discussions within four weeks, and that cancellation is "not on the agenda." While the Olympics have been canceled in the past, because of World War I and World War II, they have never been postponed to a different year. Also on Monday, Reuters reported that Japan Olympic Committee President Yasuhiro Yamashita said he was considering postponement, reflecting the most recent comments from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. US President Donald Trump tweeted that he will back whatever decision Abe makes: "We will be guided by the wishes of Prime Minister Abe of Japan." Even if the event were to take place as scheduled, Canadian and Australian athletes wouldn't compete. On March 22, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee announced that their teams won't head to Tokyo and urged that competition be postponed for one year. The Australian Olympic Committee's executive board also unanimously agreed not to send a team and encouraged athletes to instead prepare for a summer 2021 event. And on March 20, USA Swimming, the national governing body for competitive swimming, sent a letter to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee urging the group to postpone the Summer Games to 2021. The virus came close to the Olympics on March 19, when it was announced that Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief Yoshiro Mori, 82, attended a March 10 meeting with Kozo Tashima, the deputy head of the Japanese Olympic Committee who later tested positive for coronavirus. Mori has no symptoms and hasn't been tested. The men were seated about 10 meters (about 32 feet) apart. The Olympics are huge, both in numbers of people involved, and in billions of dollars spent. More than 11,000 athletes from 206 nations are hoping to compete in 339 events. Many thousands more are planning to work in some part of the games, from food and souvenir vendors to hotel clerks to trainers and coaches. NBC had been set to broadcast the games in the US, even offering a dedicated streaming Olympics package for those who want to watch as much as possible, with no ads. And as evidenced by the fact that tickets sold out last July, thousands more were planning to watch the events, whether traveling from across town or across the planet. The 1916 Summer Games were canceled due to World War I. The 1940 and 1944 Games, both winter and summer, were canceled due to World War II. (Japan was the country affected back then, too -- the 1940 Games were set for Tokyo and Sapporo.) Other games have been affected by boycotts. By contrast, in 2016, the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, played out as scheduled despite scientists' warnings about the Zika virus. The next Olympics after Tokyo are the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, followed by the 2024 Paris Summer Games, and then the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy CNET's Sean Keane contributed to this report.
  2. Warning: there are some dark topics in this post such as bullying, stranger danger, sexual references. Something I think about a lot - not surprising since social media is pretty much ingrained in most people's daily routines these days - is how Christians use and let their children use social media. Are some apps okay and others not? Or do you ban it completely in your household? Do you track your kids activity or put protective passwords on the internet? I've thought about this a lot in the past, but thought I'd post about it now because at the moment, I'm sitting in my 13 year old sister's room while she's on her phone talking to a stranger over WhatsApp. The stranger is a teenager who is confused about their gender. They already had reassignment surgery and now a couple years later they want to change back, so my sis tells me. They're also a self harmer, which I have sympathy for, but I don't really want my sis exposed to any pictures or gory info about this person's experiences with self harm. My sister is mature, but lacks common sense sometimes. The stranger has been harassing her for months, saying that she loves her and that she belongs to her. Even though my sis has made it perfectly clear they're not 'together' this person keeps insisting they are and she knows one of my sister's friends in person apparently. That's kinda creepy. I only use FB and IG for business promotion now, but in the past I've had messages from strangers on IG which turned out to be naked pics or porn, and I'm a bit worried my sister has experienced this too. Of course I can't do anything about it since she's not my child. I've told her to block the person but she says she feels bad if she ignores them as they guilt trip her with sad stories about them. I've got all her passwords so I can monitor what she's doing online. I trust her, she's not an idiot, but I don't trust other people on the internet. (How ironic that I'm posting this on an online forum ?) She's sweet and innocent and smart, never had a boyfriend, whereas her real friends have had boyfriends and girlfriends and done things with them. She knows I don't think she's in the right circle, but she thinks she knows what she's doing. I can't blame her, I was the same at her age, however I always say I was born first so I could do all the stupid stuff so they wouldn't have to. I was hoping they'd learn from my mistakes lol. Point is, the internet can be a dangerous place, especially for kids. For most people these days images of sex/violence, deadly internet pranks/trends and online bullying is normal and not something to be especially anxious about, but for Christians who actually practice what they preach and try their best to keep themselves and their families away from these things in real life, the internet and social media is something worth protecting ourselves and our children from. So I want opinions from fellow Christians. Is it okay to let your kids/younger siblings on the internet unsupervised, or should we block some things? Or can some kids be trusted to obey their parents if they set some basic rules for using the internet? Should kids be banned from social media all together? By kids I mean people under 16. Other than staying in touch with friends, I don't see the point in people younger than 16 having social media. Sure sometimes their picture gets likes and it makes them feel good for a bit, but sometimes they don't get any likes or response on their posts at all and believe me, in a teen's mind the bad will always outweigh the good, whether they're Christian or not. It's like if a hundred people all gave you a compliment. You'd appreciate them, but if someone insulted you, you'd think more about the insult than the compliment. I don't know, maybe I'm just one of those people who doesn't understand it despite my age. I grew up poor and while some of my friends had all the latest tech as soon as it hit the shops, I had to use a landline or my legs to stay in touch with people until I was fifteen, when I finally got my own laptop. I didn't have a decent mobile phone (that I didn't have to share with my 2 brothers) til I was seventeen and even then I never had credit, so I wasn't constantly available to everyone. I just find it weird that such young kids are so easily accessible to friends and strangers alike I guess ? What do you think and what are some good and bad experiences you or your children have had on the internet??
  3. Daily Reading 16 If you prefer, you can look up the following verses in your own Bible, of by whatever means and in whatever version you choose. Luke 13:1-17 Genesis 23 Psalm 16 Audio 5:02 Audio 2:34 Audio 1:19 The above addresses are linked to Bible Gateway. That is an easy way to read (or listen to) the Bible verses, and choose your version. Personally, I prefer written, that way I can go at my own pace, on think about it, before moving on. Nothing wrong with doing either or both. The Bible says faith comes by hearing. See the picture below to get an idea of what to expect if you follow the above links. Thank you Lord for making the your word so accessible for us in these times. Amen
  4. Here are some ideas for new riders and for forgetful seasoned riders, to help make your outings safer. Feel free to add more tips to this thread, someone's life my depend upon it. Make eye contact, and once you are looking the square in the eyes and they are looking you square in the eyes, assume they do not see you anyway. Assume that the other guy will misjudge your speed. When approaching intersections, be prepared in your mind how you will avoid contact when the other driver suddenly turns in front of you at the last moment. Watch your mirrors frequently, and allow the person behing you plent of room for stopping, they will not alway slow done sufficienty - you want to be gone before they can reach you when you turn or slow down. When you are stopped in traffic, for any reason, you are very vulnerable, you cannot maneuver while stationary. Have an escape route planned to beout of the way of the car that is going to hit you from behind, so keep a close watch on cross traffic so you can see the hole you will need to dart through if running through cross traffic is your only way of escape. Keep the threat factor in mind, The bigger a vehicle is, the more visible it is and the more threatening it is. Guess what, you do not represent much of a threat, so bear in mind that the other guy is not afraid of you, and will do stupider things than would otherwise be so. Be confident, not over confident. You might think yourself quicker and mor maneuverable with better stopping power than other vehicles around you, and that might even be true. However, what the bike can do and what you will actually do in an emergency situation, are seldom the same thing Leave yourself margins of safety. Take your vulnerablilites seriously. You are out in the open, and have little protection in a collision. If hit, you will get hurt. You will fall, for stupid reasons, and even a fall while standing still can break bones. Things that are not serious safety concerns in a car, can be fatal on a bike. Confidence grows with experience, faster than skill does. After riding for 6 months, you will feel pretty sure of yourself. DON'T! Letting your gaurd down is asking for trouble, and might lenghten you reaction time, but so can being tense. Find that balance between cockiness and being dethly afraid for your life. Pay attention. Look around a lot. Look around some more. When you are about to transition from a parking lot to a street, consider hesitating in the parking lot somedistance from the street - reason is that you will likely be higher there, and able to see over parked cars. Be aware that often there is water, or sand, or oil on street surfaces, and they can cause you to lose traction during acceleration, deceleration or cornering. Avoiding sudden changes in velocity or direction, will maximize stability in traction challenging situations. Dress appropriatly, it is far better to keep your skin than it is to me comfortable in hot weather. Wearing shorts, sandals, short sleaves as riding atire, is just plain stupid actually. Helmets go without saying. When choosing riding atire, consider how likely it is to tear in a spill, or wear away from abrasion, There is a reason that leather is common, also true with some tough artificial fabrics. Look over the attice for features like daytime visibility, reflectivness, pockets (you do not want to carry things not secured in some way) and flaps, snaps, and zippers that can be configured to keep wind out if could, and force air through when hot.The more comforable it is, the less likely you will want to take it off. Fabrics should be water shedding, if possibility exists for rain riding. Don't ride in fog, just don't. Anytime visibility is limited, riding is a bad idea, but during fog, the streets are slippery also. This means that the car behind you will not see you until he is skidding into you, and you cannot see far enough ahead, so you must ride slower. Of course the stupid driver behind you, won't slow down, and he will see you when it is too late. Don't be afraid to call in sick or take the car and arrive late. Check your tire pressure everytime before you ride. Keep a cell phone with you, and figure out ahead of time, what you will do when you get a flat, after all, you have no spare. I recommend that you prove that you can change (rear) tire roadside, with the tools you will be carrying, if you lack that mechanical, skill, maybe a bike is not your best choice. Don't ride a bike you cannot pick up, or that you cannot put both feet at least mostly flac footed on the ground. On your shoes or boots, no heels, and get soles that are oil resistant. If you have to drive through a puddle or greasy/oily spot, remember that that substance will remain on your tires for a while. Some recommend that you avoid the center of a lane, as that is where the oil and debris is. While that is true, riding off center puts you closer to other cars and truck, and at high speed, winds from them can move you around. Extreme tail winds can cause over heating expecially with an air colled motor, pay attention to that. Gusty side winds can be interesting, but usually not a problem. I gust from your right side, will cause you bike to lean right (sounds wierd but true) and that will make you automatically steer into the wind as a correction, but it can startle you the first time it happens. Be careful using a side stand on a hot day on asphalt (tarmac). It might sink in and topple the bike. Sometimes an inexperienced rider will enter a corner too fast, and then realize "I am going too fast, and won't make this curve!" Chances are the bike will make the curve just fine, if it isn't dragginh the frame on the ground, it is probably not hear it's limits. remain confident and just lean around the turn - resist the urge to go straight, that almost never turns out well. If you are a passenger or what to tell your passenger: Hang on to the waist of the driver, do not be shy. Almost any motorcycle can accerate hard enough to leave you sitting in imbarrassment in the street. However this embarrassment is short lived, the followuing car is only seconds behind you. When the driver leans the motorcycle, do not fight it, and do not add to it, follow the riders lean motion, Motorcycles do not turn or steer with the handlebars, the handlebars only help leverage a lean.So when a passanger leans differently that the driver, he or she is fighting and hurting the drivers ability to control the bike. Upholstery. Really? Yes really. Many motorcyclists take pride in the appearnace of their rides. Some atempt to use upholstery cleaners and conditioners. Use caution here. SOmetimes these productc contain slippery ingredients, and in combination with some riding suit material, create a situation not unlike trying to cactch a greased pig with teflon cloves. A little throttle and you look like the inexperiences passenger we just described, except you are more embarrased becuase you cannot blame another driver.
