I myself hold the position that it is unwise, and from what I've read in the Word, it just isn't a good idea- unless it's wine consumed by someone who is sick and/or dying. Both Proverbs and 1 Timothy state that.

I plan to evaluate the Greek text to see specific meanings for the words used in their contexts.

But anyways, my reason for asking is because I've knocked heads with my girlfriend a few times about the issue. She says, "I've never tried it. What's wrong with just trying it? I mean, Jesus drank wine... it's okay as long as you don't get drunk. It's not a sin."

What I need is scriptural evidence for the the doctrines concerning alcohol; whether or not it should be consumed or not.

Thank you.

I'd be interested in that myself as I am opposed to alcohol. Don't drink and don't want to be around anyone who does. But, if it's okay with the Lord, then who am I to chastise others? :noidea:

Paul warned of 'drunkeness'....

Romans 13:13

13Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

also in Titus...

Titus 1:7

7Since an overseer[a] is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless

I drink if my opinion is of any value to you.. but I drink only on special occasions and maybe a glass of wine or two (which happens only about once a year btw). I don't feel ashamed about it for the same reason your girlfriend stated.

Frankly, I think some Christians are just too self-righteous and prideful to admit they have a drinking problem they can't control and want to place their pain on others which to me is unwise.. Drinking is not my life and I don't indulge in it to "help digest my food" as some people use the excuse.. I only drink if others are drinking during a special event but limit myself to one or two glasses that's it. This is most likely new years or thanksgiving.

Drinking alcohol is not a sin. I don't even believe drinking to excess is a sin. It's what happens when one is under the influence of alcohol that we must question.

If the consumption of alcohol were a sin, then Christ Himself is guilty.

As I stated, it's what we do when we're under the influence. 9 times out of 10, it's not good.

And just so you know, I'm not a drinker.

you're 18. i'm assuming your girlfriend is near the same age. that makes drinking ILLEGAL.

scripture indicates we are not to drink to excess, but does not forbid us from having wine or even strong drink. but... scripture also tells us to obey the laws of the land, and you would be in direct disobedience to God to consume alcohol at your age.

Something else came to mind.. Drinking kills brain cells. When I was an unbeliver and deceived by the world and it's many shiny new things, my best friend introducted me to drinking.. well it wasn't too long until binge drinking with his other buddies became a common thing when we were out together.

I can tell you right now, my eyes are not the same as they were when I never drank.. its as if it's got a snowy picture effect that is common about TV's which don't have a good signal. It's not so visible but it's there if I'm staring at the wall or something that doesn't move. Also on really bright days if I look at the sky there is a constant billowing black cloud right in the middle of my vision. I had this checked out by an eye doctor twice by two separate physicians and they suggested that my vision is fine but I know its not fine. One suggested I see a specialist just to confirm, I haven't done that just yet.

I haven't drank really in about 2 almost 3 years now, except for one glass of wine this past thanksgiving if my memory serves me correctly. Anyway, drinking little or excessive is a bad way to go..

(btw, I gave myself to Christ around 2.5 years ago)
