After a discussion with someone, I thought it would be interesting to ask this forum what they think. Im always interested to know what others were taught or believe.

After Adam and Eve fell, God clothed them in animal hides. Which animal is it? What does scripture say about it?

Here is scripture.

Genesis 3:21 (New American Standard Bible)

The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

I just read This particular part of Genesis in three different versions, and it only states "garments of skin" or "tunics of skin". I can't see anywhere a reference to a particular animal.

The closest I can find for a sin offering is found in these scriptures. Since the first sacrifice was for the covering of sin, it is very possible that a bull was used. I understand that these are for the priests, but I have to wonder if Adam is considered the first priest since he walked daily with God.

Wayne Watson - a contemporary Christian singer from years back - recorded a song dealing with this. I believe it explains all we need to know about this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the land of God's first heartache
Where our line of sin began
And the eyes of man were open
To the evil there at hand
The Creator heard the footsteps
But He did not see the man
And God called out for an answer
But he turned away and ran
An attempt in desperation
To be hid from holy eyes
Was to fashion out a garment
That would hide him in disguise
But the Father bled compassion
And with a fast forgiving hand
Took the life of one yet blameless
And made a covering for the man
Chorus
Offer up the sacrifice
Creation sent forth the call
One holy sacrifice
One life to pay for the fall
Offer up the sacrifice
The innocent one must be slain
Someone to pay the price
And bring men back to God again
On a hill outside Jerusalem
Where our sin had took its toll
On the life of One as blameless
As the Garden beast of old
And He bled with God's compassion
For the evil man had done
And the heart that cired, "Forgive them!"
Was the heart of God's own Son
The broken heart of God's own Son
(Chorus)
"Offer Up the Sacrifice" ~ Wayne Watson
I'm going with wool. simply because of the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the earth, to be our covering.
Also, based on Hosea
Hos 2:9 Therefore I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season, and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness
In my study of the word, in Genesis it does not give a name of the animal that was slain for it's skin but since that time mankind has had to have a covering.
The song Nebula gave, "Offer Up The Sacrifice" with it's strong lyrics painted the picture and said it all oh, so well.
The scriptures Traveller, gave were interesting as well as being thought provoking
;)
