America is spending even more on healthcare ... for Mr. Tabby

Upon adopting a dog a few years ago, a rather churlish acquaintance of ours said,

We had a really pretty Himalayan cat that had high blood pressure...... Vet tried to get me to treat it with pills...... to the tune of $315.00 a month. The cat dies early in life for there simply is no way. We have friends what has spent over a thousand dollars more than once for their dogs..... I really never loved my pets that much...... but then again I grew up in the country where things lived and died and were replaced.

I honestly do not know what my top stop is....... but it's a whole lot less than

$300 a month and it's a whole lot less than a thousand dollars.

I do not own any pets. I can;t see the sense in spending money feeding some creature and then having to clean its poop. I don't want dog hair or cat hair around my house. No matter the argument you will never convince me your animal isn't leaving excrement in your house. Ewww!

during screamer's last few years, we spent a lot... the cat was 20 when we had her put down, and her health had deteriorated from advance renal failure and a thyroid tumor. she had frequent vet visits, she had to have a special food that cost about $30 a week, she had three pills twice a day, and subcutaneous fluids twice a week. i never calculated the cost. she was part of our family. she'd been my husband's cat for 17 of her 20 years.

just recently, i had to have my himalayan put down. his expenses weren't nearly as much as screamer's had been, but they were still up there. jordy and i had been together for 18 years... he also had kidney issues, he had a malignant tumor, and then he developed another tumor, the kind that grows and grows and all the blood vessels get tangled up. i forget what it's called, but it was growing at a rate of 1/4" per week, and when it got more than 9", i made the difficult decision. he was the most wonderful cat i'd ever owned, and you can't put a price tag on that.

in the end it's a personal decision one must make. you have to weigh the options. if treatment is going to give the animal a longer, and BETTER QUALITY of life, then i'd be willing to pay whatever it took.

I spend roughly $1,000 a year on vet bills and flea treaments, etc. I believe when you take a pet, it's for their lifetime and you should do everything you can for them, including giving them attention and a lot of love. If a person doesn't want to make that committment, they shouldn't bring the pet home. I would spend as much as I could afford to spend.

I can't have kids. My dogs are my furkids. I have insurance on them but I'd spend anything on them to make sure they lived a happy and healthy life. And I agree with MorningGlory, if you can't make the commitment to get your pets checked and protected, then you shouldn't get any.

I actually do a good bit of lab work for both humans and animals, and charge the same regardless of patient. Sadly, I think there is a limit before one considers an animal "totaled". Sorry, had a car wreck this weekend.
