South Africa

We do not have lions in our backyards.

Not too many people live in huts.

Contrary to popular belief the country is very green (my wife expected brown rolling Savannah, and although we have lots of that, we also have a lot of greenery!)

We have a 1st world road system (with the obligatory tolls....)

Cape Town has been voted as one of the most beautiful cities in the world

Durban (where I was raised), is the biggest port in Africa.

Johannesburg is a huge metropolis built on gold, and has the deepest mines in the world (so deep that it gets so hot they are air conditioned)

We are a major exporter of citrus fruit, apples, sugar, timber and wood pulp, gold, uranium, titanium, aluminium, diamonds and coal.

We invented the process, and produce our own fuel from coal.

We did the very first heart transplant.

We have the best Rugby and Cricket teams in the world......

Agreed.

Might I add, that even though there is a high crime rate, South Africa is by no means unsafe. it all depends on where you go.

I have lived in Alaska for a few years, and so I will clear up some misconceptions that I have heard:

We do not have 12 months of winter, its 6 months, and we do have summer, two weeks in July, the temps have reached triple digits above zero

We do not have complete darkness in the winter, but close, we get 4 hours of daylight in the winter, and Barrow, AK gets 4 months of total darkness.

We do not live in igloos, we live in houses, apartments, cabins, and tents

Not all indigenous people are Eskimos.

Alaska is larger than Texas.

Not all indigenous people are Eskimos.

Actually, the indigenous people don't like being called "Eskimos". That was a derogatory term given them. They call themselves "Inuit."

Do you know what other indigenous people are there?

San Diego.

That's where I presently live.

What you see in the postcards is all true. Nice touristy stuff.

But if you live here...well that is another story. The touristy stuff quickly gets boring.

Instead you are left with inconsiderate folks, hoodlums, punks, very dry weather in the summers..so dry that a lot of stuff just dies, VERY expensive to live here, San Diego proper is absolutely full of homeless folks laying on the sidewalks at night, and so forth.

Rules for everything down here (though that is really more California than San Diego itself).

The favorite word of young people here starts with F if you know what that is. The favorite word of young blacks is...well...a two word phrase related to mom's that I won't even hint at.

Not quite what you read about in the tourist books.

Don't get me wrong. I am VERY glad I left my stay in Canada (where I was FREEZING to death) to come down here but I consider this place a stop on my way to South America is all.

I can't stand big, inner city Americana.

Carlos
