Do you prefer the Bible in modern or Shakespearean English

When I'm in church, I do prefer the scriptures be read in Shakespearean English. It seems more...I don't know, formal if that's the right word. However, when I read the Bible at home, I prefer it in modern English. Back when I was a kid in Sunday school, I also preferred it in modern English. Easier to learn and the teacher I had when I was seven encouraged discussion on the verses so that made it easier.

I am not going to frequent this thread as it has all been played out before, overkill like. Only to say this, Marine, whom I thank for his service, Shakespeare's timeline for his writing (1585-1611 *) ended the year the King James Bible was published, but I durst not deem it Shakespearean.

* uncertain as to when exactly William Shakespeare wrote his last work, but it is around that time.

As a warning: Bible version preference can get pretty warm around here at times. This stuff has been discussed before as mentioned earlier.

Depends for me in most cases. There are some verses that just sound better in Olde English to me - but that's just me. Modern English for reading purposes and KJV for study because many of my references are keyed to the KJV and I see no need to replace them. I'll use almost anything available (no JW versions for example, forget what the call it) if visiting a new church, home group, bible study, etc.

These are my preferences and they work well for me. Your mileage may vary.

My wife reads the CJB. She's Messianic. I use the NKJV for personal reading/study. But the KJV is what we use in church.

For study I prefer the NASB or Amplified. For pleasure I like The Message. And for the record, I haven't opened a KJV in years. That's not because I'm stupid (I'm dyslexic), but because trying to translate 1611 English in my brainpan as I go makes my head hurt.

Soft cover, so that it sort of bends over my hands, and when I fall asleep with it on my chest it sort of contours to my shape.....

Also I recently got a larger font bible (ESV), and it has made a huge difference to my reading....

I use several translations of the Holy Bible almost every day, many times side-by-side for comparison (i.e. KJV, ESV, NASB, Amplified). The ESV and the NASB are running a close race for being the most accurate word for word translations.
