What is an Idol?

105 posts in this topic

The U.S. Government and in some instances the President himself have become Idols in the American culture. Yes, a person can be an Idol. Anything or anyone that you place in your life before God is an Idol and that can include yourself.

I am in complete agreement. Anything one puts before God is an idol.

Amen and I would offer this as scriptural proof;

Ex 20:2

I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Ex 20:3

You shall have no other gods before me.

Pharoah demanded worship as if he were a god.

We also see an inherit danger in a coming worldwide Governmental system that includes the worship of a satan inhabited man. A form of false incarnation.

Re 13:4

And they worshiped the dragon who gave power unto the beast: and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

Everyone has their own opinion on what an idol is.

What does the bible say an idol is?

Scripture would be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Your opinion means exactly squat. Not that you're not entitled to it however.

There are no private interpretations of the Word.

2Pe 1:20

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of one's own interpretation.

2Pe 1:21

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Yep I know where you are going with this, but don't you think there is an inference that anything you put before God is an idol? Like I know porn is a sin, but sitting in front of your computer all day looking at it, kind of makes it an idol?

That's why I asked for scripture. ;)

What did these "holy men of God" have to say concerning idols?

As is your God given right, and far be it for me to argue with you!

And I will add Ezekiel 36:25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

And Clarke's commentary...

Ezekiel 36:25

Then - At the time of this great restoration - will I sprinkle clean water upon you - the truly cleansing water; the influences of the Holy Spirit typified by water, whose property it is to cleanse, whiten, purify, refresh, render healthy and fruitful.

From all your filthiness - From every sort of external and internal abomination and pollution.

And from all your idols - False gods, false worship, false opinions, and false hopes.

Will I cleanse you - Entirely separate you.

You know, God deals with one person one way and with another a different way. He speaks to our hearts...through our minds however

you want to phrase it.,...He doesn't sit back and go "OK...kiddo...go look it up . It's in the Bible...maybe if you spent more time there you

might learn something."

I think it is the concept in the mind of a person that makes something an idol.

And I also think that is in keeping with what I understand scripture to say. The first commandment..."Thou shalt have no other gods before me"

does not specify a 3D object...it seems to suggest whatever takes the place of God in your life is an idol.

A graven image would be, from what I have come to understand, a misrepresentation of God created to represent Him..God does not want

any sort of physical object to represent Him is what I understand when I take a serious look at the scriptures that deal with this subject
