With more than half of U.S. states experiencing high levels of flu-like illness -- and flu activity continuing to rise, ERs across the country are seeing a surge in business -- and some are struggling to keep up.

Take notes, this is the time to consume foods and beverages and vitamins that boost your immune system.

Everyone that went home for the holidays brought back their favorite bugs with them, and have turned our university into a Petri dish. I expect its the same all over the country right now.

I've had (what I assume to be) strep for the last week and have been trying to avoid going to the ER because of the flu and how widespread it is. I have finally decided to go in this evening when I can get a ride there. It is a shame when you are trying to save the medicaid program money by avoiding the ER (I wanted to go to urgent care), but you cannot even get a callback to change your Doctor (which is almost three counties away). Stay safe guys. I will have a mask on when I go in that's for sure.

Get the flu vaccine.

Mike works in one of those "petri dishes". He gets the flu vaccine every year. His coworker doesnt. Mike doesnt get sick with the flu. The coworker does.

I read the same thing somewhere. The article said that some strains of the flu weren't covered by the flu shot.

The vaccine takes 3 weeks to be fully effective, during which time you can get the flu. The vaccine injection is a killed virus, not live virus, so you cant get the flu from that shot. The nasal vaccine is a live virus vaccine.

30,000 people die in the US each year from the flu.
