Since God said first in Genesis 2:24 that a man shall leave his mother and father and be joined

to his wife and they shall be one flesh. This makes me believe is that one man and one woman

is holy and united under God into the Holy Matrimony.

So if this is the case then why did the men and that especially in the Old Testament were allowed in the

eyes of God to marry more then one woman?

When did this start? When did it end?

The first one to marry more than one wife at a time was Lamech, a descendent of Cain. Lamech was also a murderer. God may have permitted it but He did not approve of it.

Genesis 4

17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And Irad was born to Enoch. And Irad fathered Mehujael. And Mehujael fathered Methusael. And Methusael fathered Lamech.

19 ¶ And Lamech took two wives to himself. The name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.

20 And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents, and with cattle.

21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those playing the harp and the organ.

22 And Zillah also bore Tubalcain, the hammerer of every engraving tool of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23 ¶ And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have killed a man because of my wound, and a young man because of my hurt.

24 For Cain is avenged seven times, and Lamech seventy-seven times.

Sigh. I have no idea why that one sentence has a different font than any other one. Sometimes this software is screwy.

Mark 10:6-8

New International Version (NIV)

6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a]7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b]8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Is it Gods plan and intention that a man have only one wife?

I believe the answer is yes based upon what I have understand the scriptures to reveal.

Is it ever OK to have more than one wife?

I believe that there are circumstances that can warrant it.

Polygamy is a very controversial topic. I have no interest in partaking in it myself but a pretty strong argument can be put together to support the possibility of righteously partaking in polygamy using scripture. The strongest arguments point to Gods plan being one man and one woman for life but does not discount polygamy as an unrighteous act.

Who would survive more than one wife? God loves us, He would never want us to have two.

Jesus Is Lord.

God uses a lot of images to express His word to us. Among them is marriage. He set the pattern for what is good and right with Adam and Eve. It is the picture, the type, of relationship between Christ and the Church. The church is often described as the bride and Jesus as the bridegroom.

God set the pattern. Polygamous marriage is not part of that pattern.
