Shawnee, Oklahoma (CNN) -- A powerful tornado blasted an area outside of Oklahoma City on Monday, ripping roofs off buildings, leveling homes and leaving a massive band of destruction in its wake.

In the desperate seconds and minutes after the storm passed, the human toll was yet to even begin to be counted.

Survivors emerged from shelters to see an apocalyptic vision -- the remnants of cars twisted and piled on each other to make what had been a parking lot look like a junk yard. Bright orange flames roaring from a structure that was blazing even as rain continued to fall.

At least one school was in the tornado's devastation zone in Moore, Oklahoma. Lance West, a reporter for CNN affiliate KFOR, says there were people pulling students from a classroom at an elementary school heavily damaged by the tornado. There were no immediate reports on the condition of the children.

"Our worst fears are becoming realized this afternoon," Bill Bunting, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center, told CNN.

kfor has live feed. Its just depressing. Watched them try and unbury a victim trapped under a wall who was calling to them. How many are alive buried but unable to call out?

Oklahoma police told Fox News' Casey Stegall, on the ground in Moore, Okla., that at least four people were killed at a 7-11 convenience store as the tornado carved through the area.

one resident told Fox News that children were trapped under cars at an elementary school.

24 victims are assumed to be in the rubble of the Plaza Towers Elementary school.

The effort at the elementary school is now a recovery mission and not a search rescue effort, according to KFOR’s Lance West. (Meaning they dont expect survivors any more.)

KFOR’s Meg Alexander reports at least 4 found dead at 4th and Telephone, including a 7 month old baby.

Very sad news from KFOR’s Lance West: search and rescue said there don’t appear to be any more survivors at Plaza Towers Elementary. Seven children’s bodies were removed from the school, and they believe 20 to 30 more children may be inside, but do not believe there are any more survivors.

This is truly terrible. I don't understand why schools in a place as known for tornadoes as Oklahoma, would not have shelters built in to them. Feel so horrible for the poor parents and families. :(

What an awful day in history.
