What does the Bible say about pride?

Recommended Posts

I sure see alot of it in our world.Everywhere :huh:

Their is a difference between the kind of pride that God hates Proverbs 8:13 and the kind of pride we feel about a job well done.The kind of pride that stems from self-righeousness is a sin,and God hates it because it is a hindrance to seeking Him.Psalm 10:4 explains that the proud are so consumed with themselves that their thoughts are far from God.

Proverbs 16:18-19

Isaiah 14:12-15

1 Corinthians 4:7

Why is pride sinful?Pride is giving ourselves the credit for something that God has accomplished.Pride is taking the glory that belongs to God alone and keeping it for ourselves.Pride is essentially self worship.

Pro 16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pro 16:19  Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

yep i see it too, but the bible says we all have a problem with pride. It shows up in criticism, comparing things is also evidence of pride, even when your having a hard time saying sorry to someone is a indication of having pride.  And yes pride will destroy a person.

Proverbs 16

 5 Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord;

Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.

Pride can keep a Christian from Christ.

1Tim 3:6  He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

I think this particular verse is directed toward Bishops or leaders of the church; not necessarily christians; but Christians like myself have to tame it for sure; Ive not completed that task yet.

The context of this verse has to do with listing the qualifications of an elder or overseer of a church body.  1 Tim 3:6 is directed to a young or "recent convert" i.e. new Christian as indicated by the word "convert" - in other words, a new believer. The warning is that a new believer must not be an elder in the church lest he become conceited and fall prey to the sin of pride.
