http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/01/10/doctors-remove-large-cockroach-from-man-ear/?intcmp=obnetwork

A man in Australia had to be rushed to hospital in terrible pain after a large cockroach crawled into his ear as he slept, and an attempt to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner failed.

Medical treatment initially only caused the inch-long insect to burrow further into the head of Hendrik Helmer.

The unwelcome invader was eventually extracted by a doctor with forceps, but only after Helmer had endured the unpleasant sensation of it being in the "throes of death-twitching."

His ordeal began in the early hours of Wednesday morning when he was woken by a sharp pain in his right ear, according to Australian TV.

He said: "I was hoping it was not a poisonous spider ... I was hoping it didn't bite me."

That's pretty common I thought. Maybe not of big ole cockroaches, but I know insects and such have done it quite a few times.

When one of my sisters was younger she awoke with the complaining that there was a lady bug that was stuck in her ear. She had a fear of them from before and had not seen what was in her ear, but low and behold, when we got something out of her ear, it was still a live lady bug.

trying to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner sounds kind of dangerous to me...

We always had a set of hemostats around for things of that nature.

I have heard that those who sleep with their mouth open, unknowingly swallow tiny bugs, spiders etc.

Maybe they should have shone a torch in his ear - don't insects go toward the light?

Roaches are afraid of light.....

A torch in my world is not a flashlight but something that has a flame on the end of it......     reading about shinning a torch in someone's ear really caught my attention for a moment....
