Guest shiloh357
Because it says languages. Meaning more than one, so different different languages exist. The problem is that you are assuming that chapter 10 and chapter 11 are chronological. Chapter 10 is not a reference to humanity pre-Tower of Babel. it is a genealogy that describes the dispersal of man that occurred AFTER the tower of Babel and after God confused the languages and created several languages. Babel is after the flood as well. The problem is that you have only ONE world-wide language at Babel. That means that the information given in chapter 10 isn't describing a pre-babel world. It isn't necessarily chronologically written. The story of Babel is telling us how the many languages in chapter 10 came to be.
Guest Angie
Yes it is chronically written, hence the generations born after the flood, Genesis 10:1 also see Genesis 9:1, Genesis 9:

But for the sake of argument how do you reconcile Gen. 10 which says that there were many languages and Gen. 11 that says there was only one language at the time? So,are you a Christian?Do you believe in God,Do you believe His Word is true?So if you claim to believe it is true than can you answer Shilohs question....... No, you are wrong. But for the sake of argument how do you reconcile Gen. 10 which says that there were many languages and Gen. 11 that says there was only one language at the time? posted by Shiloh If you are trying to say that God has contradicted Himself it is completely clear and evident to me that you do not believe the Bible is the true, accurate, infallible God Breathed Word........................ or perhaps you just like to debate for the sake of obstinence? There are NO contradictions in the Bible, only mis-interpretations by people With love,Kwik

Languages existed before Babel. That's your bible's problem, not mine. Edited November 4, 2014 by Angie

Languages existed before Babel. That's your bible's problem, not mine. It's not a problem at all. You are simply not competent to handle the Bible. Chapter 10 does not chronologically follow chapter 11. The Bible was not originally written in chapter and verse and historical narratives are not necessarily written in a linear fashion. The various languages appeared after the dispersal of mankind and not before. You can't reconcile it because you don't know the Bible and thus are really even intellectually qualified to debate about it.
Guest Teditis
I think that anyone one who can read is "competent" enough to read the Bible and should continue doing so regardless of other peoples opinions and personal attacks... stay strong in the Lord Angie.
