Navy beans are classified as one of the world's healthiest foods.

What about army beans, or air force beans?

Only if they have been through the academy

I've just learned something. I didn't think that we had navy beans in the UK but we do - they're called haricot beans.

In comparison to a can of baked beans the sodium is not nearly as much. You could use only two slices of bacon.Just enough to give it flavor. One slice of bacon cooked has 23 mg of salt. You can use salt free ketsup because the originial has alot of sodium in it.Yes the worcestershire salt has  167 mg of sodium but you can cut that in half. The beans would still taste good and you don't have to have 3 huge heapings of the beans.A 1/2 cup serving of canned baked beans is 550 mg of salt. That is about two bites. And that was the lowest sodium content I could find.I think once in a while a person has to splurge a little bit. They are going to feel so deprived eventually that they are going to do it on there own.Homemade baked beans can be frozen in the freezer for 6 months. So once in awhile when you get hungry for them just take out a portion and thaw it.

You need at least a little bit of sodium otherwise you'll eventually die.

Our bodies need 1,500 mg a day.But that adds up pretty fast. The thyroid needs iodized salt.

For Fez:

Boston Baked Beans

2 cups navy beans

1/2 lb bacon sliced**( I cook it before I put it in the beans and drain the grease, otherwise the beans are pretty greasy)

1 onion,finely chopped

3 tablespoons molasses

2 teaspoons salt (I only use one teaspoon of salt to make the beans less salty)

1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

1/4 teaspoon mustard (you can use dry mustard if you want)

1/2 cup ketsup(I use salt free ketsup)

1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup brown sugar

1.Soak beans overnight in cold water.Simmer the beans in the same water until tender appox.1-2 hours.Drain and reserve the liquid.

2.Preheat oven to 325 degrees

3.Arrange the beans in a 2 quart casserole by placing a portion of the beans in bottom of casserole, and layering them with bacon and onions.

4.In a saucepan, combine molasses, salt, pepper, mustard, ketsup, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar.Bring to a boil and pour over beans.Pour just enough of the reserved bean water to cover the beans.Cover dish with lid or foil.

5.Bake for 3-4 hours, until beans are tender.Remove lid halfway through cooking, and add more liquid if needed to prevent beans from getting too dry.

Also Fez I like my beans thick so I left the lid off for the last two hours.Just keep your eye on them that they do not get too dry.If you keep the lid on the whole time they tend to be a little soupy.

Bopeep, how many servings will 2 cups of navy beans produce?  Thanks.
