There are actually a number of verses in the Bible that Catholics use to justify purgatory but they are serious misinterpretations, in the same way that they misinterpret 'intercession' to justify praying to dead people. To understand scripture is to understand Greek. The only time Hades is used as a place of torment is in the parable of Luke 16:19-31.
