The young dogs run, leap and jump. Sometime next to me, ahead of me, behind me and even sometimes crashing into me with reckless abandon. Some times the younger dogs get too far ahead and I have to call them back to me and remind them who they belong with. Sometimes they keep dashing off and I have to put them back on a leash and take away some of their freedom until they settle down a bit. The dogs in the prime of their life also run, leap and jump but always staying fairly close to me. Never letting me out of their site and often running back to me for a pat, a scratch or to bring me a stick. They've been on these walks before and have learned the hike is fun, but really only because their person (me) is with them. The old dogs no longer run, leap & jump on our walks. They are always by my side, stopping and waiting for me if they get more than a few feet ahead. They are not distracted by the squirrels in the trees (or the bunny who just took off like a shot) but instead relish the hike not for the hike but for the time spent with one another. Sometimes I'm that puppy, the well behaved adult or the old dog. Sometimes all within in the course of the same day

But maybe that's because they have already learnt the most valuable lessons! As we grow older, may we all learn the lessons God wants to show us and have a teachable spirit.
