I would like If I may to ask two further questions. This time in respect of the following verses.

Philippians 2:5-9, (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus,
6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. a
7 Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form,
8 He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross.
9 For this reason God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name,

Footnote: a verse 6 Or to be grasped, or to be held on to

Firstly in verse 7, the expression, "emptied himself ", if translated literally from the Greek, would read, "emptied himself empty", this is emphatic, that is to say totally, not partially, in other words, whatever it was Jesus emptied Himself of, it was, all of, not some of .

What in your opinion was it of which Jesus ""emptied himself empty"?

Secondly, in respect of verse 9. Just what is your understanding of "the name that is above every name"?

Thank you.

Edwin.

Hi Edwin, it means that he made himself of no reputation, meaning his confidence was not in his flesh, he humbled himself, he didn't go around talking of all that he created nor did he proclaim his deity as being boastful.

For your second question, the name that is above all names means that Jesus whose name means God is salvation, is above all names because apart from God there is nothing else nor no one else that can save.

God the Son, the Word gave up His position as well as being in the form of God, to complete, totally empty Himself into to the form of man. He took on flesh for our sakes. The fullness of the Godhead dwelt in human form. He not only become human, but he humbled himself to be a servent and to be wrongfully crucified as though he were a criminal. While He was God in human flesh Col. 1:19, 2:9 He was still limited somewhat by this human body. He could only be in one place at a time, for instance. That is why he went away and sent the Holy Spirit to us.

A person's good name is his reputation and his honor. We no longer think in these terms, when a persons word was beliieved because of his good name or reputation. We no longer see many people of honor, who never lie or manipulate people but are full of unselfish integrity. Christ's name conveyed such purity and honor that it created awe and respect. His reputation was higher than any man or angel, it was so far above reproach.

As Willa was saying, explaining Jesus as God in the Flesh......think of it this way....(I do)

The Great I AM(Creator of the Universe).......left ALL His Majesty in Heaven

The King of kings who held that earth in His Hand, was reduced to a baby, clutching Marys finger

The Almighty God left His Throne to sleep in a barn atop straw, surrounded by smelly filthy animals

Sovereign God Who never hungered or thirst ,now dependent & crying for mothers milk

Lord of lords, from Angels singing Holy,Holy,Holy continually,eternally/..........now he tires & needs to sleep.................

Why? Because He loves us,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,He emptied Himself empty                           With love-in Christ,Kwik

Thank you all for your comments which are much appreciated.

My reason for starting this topic in the first place was to see if anyone else had arrived at the same opinion that I had.

I thought that question No 2 might indicate just what it was of which He "emptied himself empty".

Do you think it does, and if so. Just do you suppose it was?

Bless you all.

Edwin.

Jesus emptied Himself His equality with God.  He did not empty Himself of His deity.  Jesus was 100% man and 100% God while on earth.  Jesus did not lose any of His divinity.  Rather he added His humanity.

Jesus was equal to God but as one translation puts it, He did not consider equality with God something to use to his own advantage.  Jesus was God but He temporarily emptied Himself of the privileges associated with that equality.

As for verse 9,  The Name above all names is the four letter name of God, the tetragrammton (YHVH).

Many people use a word like humility, but understand the concept in different ways. Jesus was considered to be humble, but he was very much assertive against certain kinds of corrupt behavior. And he looked favorably on good behavior. His assertiveness was not self-assertiveness, but assertiveness against corruption and in support of God the Father and the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus was completely in accord with God's will and not his own will.  Many people in our time understand the word humility to mean masochism or merely tender-mindedness which is a corrupt form of compliance or submissiveness in order to obtain a "sense of belonging." which is a basic human need, but they miss the target as to whom and what they should be submissive to. We live in a culture of narcissism in which the contrast between good and evil is disregarded and replaced by the concepts of tough-mindedness and tender-mindedness. Tough-mindedness is bad in appearances but good in reality in the thinking of Some people; those who refer to themselves as being bad and who use the term good as a term of disrepute toward others.

Edwin, I would have to agree with these two virtuous women.

IMO Hebrews 2 and 12 dealt with your first question.  And just as Willa, and Kwik stated it was what Jesus did for us sinners.

1)  Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run we patience the race that is set before us,

2)  Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of God.

3)  For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Hebrews 12:1-3

We see in Hebrews 12:2 that Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our faith, how for joy He endured the shame, despising it that is the cross;  but did our Precious Savior despise the fact of physical death, perhaps, but I think the following verse tells us what our Savior God despised greatly.  Jesus Christ who never one knew sin, and Who hated sin, became sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him, II Corinthians 5:21.   For according to Hebrews 12:3, He endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself; that is Christ who is sinless suffered as a sinner, for those of us (every human ever) who have been held in bondage to sin and death.  The writer of Hebrews in the last part of verse 3, comforts us with this thought so that we don't worry and faint in our minds.  I would also advise reading Hebrews 2:9-18, to see how becoming Human, also emptied Christ, for in Hebrews 2:9 we see that Jesus was made lower than the angels, for this suffering.

By doing this Jesus became our Savior, so we see Luke write:  Neither is their salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  Acts 4:12  Christ Jesus name is so High to God the Father because Jesus who was the Word, became flesh for us that we might have life, see John 1:1-14.

One thing to remember from this passage in Philippians, Edwin is that every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, so next time the devil gives you troubles about your pass just remind him one day you will watch as he will have to bend his knees, and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,, oh that will be a glorious day.

shiloh357, you say.

"He did not empty Himself of His deity".

"the name that is above every name", can only apply to God who is of course divine.

Now, how is it possible to give someone what they already have?

Every blessing.

Edwin.
