As the title suggests,I want to know the characteristics of conservative Christianity ,which distinguish it from liberal Christianity.

I know many people call themselves conservative Christians,But I really don't know the difference between them and more liberal Christians.

I don't presume to speak for all conservative Christians, but as a conservative Christian I believe there are some things that I and my fellow conservatives hold in common.

  • We believe in the 100% divine inspiration and complete inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible.
  • We believe that marriage is God's domain and He alone has the right to define it.  He defines marriage as being between a man and woman, period.
  • We do not support homosexuality, gay marriage, abortion
  • We believe that Jesus and Jesus alone is the only way to God.
  • We believe that Jesus was and is God and there is no other way of salvation but through Him (John 14:6).
  • We believe that God is the creator of the universe, and we reject the Theory of Evolution.
  • We believe that God loves the world and wants to be in relationship with man as a result has made a way of salvation to that end.

This list is not exhaustive and expect my fellow conservatives will add more to it, but those are some core characteristics of conservative Christians.

Most Conservative Christians:

1. Are Pro-life

2. Oppose homosexual civil unions/marriage

3. Believe that the Bible is completely inspired and infallible.

4. Prefer limited government based on Biblical principles.

5. Hate this present world - we are in it, but not of it.

6. Believe the world is not "getting better" nor will it get better until Jesus comes again.

7. Believe the only hope mankind has is the Gospel.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

I suppose the most important characteristic of conservative Christianity may be their opposition to non-literal or very metaphorical interpretations of scripture.

I'm not really an expert on this subject.

Certainly God would not give us a Bible we could not understand literally.

The problem most people have with Scripture is it means exactly what it says. They tend not to like that because it shines a powerful light on their wicked hearts.

Yes, that is foundational.  All of Christian doctrine depends on a literal interpretation of Scripture, particularly first 11 chapters of Genesis.  Those first eleven chapters contain the origins of all major Christian doctrines add thus form the basis for a healthy Christian worldview.  So how you view that part of the Bible affects your interpretation of the rest of it.

Exactly. It's the very reason why the book of Genesis is attacked the most by the Lost.
