I made it up but it actually happens. Abu is a Muslim and currently has 2 wives, sooriaya and nesheen. Both wives have children for him and all live together as a Muslim family. One day the family all meet some Christian missionaries and all sincerely convert to Christianity. But herein lies the problem, while in their religion and country polygamy is allowed, as a Christian this goes against our principles. So what will or should they do? On one hand you don't want to continue living in an unscriptural way but on the other hand it means breaking up the family and leaving one of the wives without a husband and one set of kids without the family unit they're accustomed to. What is or should be don't in this situation?

There is no correct answer to this hypothetical question. Why a Muslim? It could just as well be someone from Africa who has three or more wives. Are there states in the USA that allow or turn a blind eye to polygamy?

It's a no brainer. He remains married to them and raises his children.  He can't be a deacon, but he should remain with his wives and children.

Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.  1Chorintians 7:20

thats a gross misuse of scripture BFP, by that logic a hitman should continue being a hitman after coming to Christ. You don't want to remain a sinner when you come to Christ-you want to live a Godly lifestyle. But in this case I concur with shiloh, it would be unloving to put one of the wives and kids out on the street. And being married to two wives isn't the worst that can happen, looking scripturally the one man and one woman thing has been there from the start-from Genesis on, however, if you look at the Israelites, polygamy was actually quite popular from Abrahams time on up, even King David who was listed as a man after Gods own heart had a large number of wives-so did Solomon, and in scripture, not only did God NOT chastise David or Solomon, He didn't even chastise them for it.

Yes fez. My state has well known polygamous towns. No one does anything about them because its political suicide. Utah is the same way.

I have to agree with Shiloh on this too. Is there a clear biblical injunction against polygamy?

It was allowed for a while but now its against the law. God wants us to obey laws unless they go against His Word. Plus not only does the Bible show us the grief having more than 1 one cause us (the example of Jacob and rachel and Leah) but it says somewhere one man and one woman  is the definition of marriage.

I agree with Fez and will go further...let God convict them if He feels they should separate....At the same time God hates divorce...where do you go from here?

The thing is, in that middle eastern culture, women are not much more than property and it is less likely that she would get remarried if he decided to divorce her.   They got married before he was converted and his children should not have to suffer and neither should his wives.  He was already marriedto them before his conversion and while it is not how we would do it, I think there is grace for this situation.   It would be a horrible thing to do to them to put them out and a bad testimony for the Lord, as well.
