from The American Spectator:

"Liberal Christianity is made up of three reductions:

1. The reduction of religion to morality.

2. The reduction of morality to love of neighbor.

3. The reduction of love of neighbor to tolerance plus welfare programs.

"The classic expression of the first reduction is found in Matthew Arnold’s definition of religion as 'morality touched by emotion.' Liturgy doesn’t much matter. Nor does dogma. And it certainly doesn’t matter whether your form of church government is congregational, presbyterian, episcopal, papal-episcopal, or even no-church-at-all.

"God says, 'I don’t care what you believe, how you worship, etc. Just be good.'

"The reduction of morality to love of neighbor allows liberal Christians to escape from the Augustinian puritanism that has been the mark of orthodox Catholicism and classical Protestantism. As long as you love your neighbor, you are being good."

But Jesus said: "Why do you call me good?... No one is good--except God alone" (Luke 18:9).

I beg to differ on 2 counts. Religion is not reduced to morality...if it were there would be no immorality in religion .. And question why Presbyterians are always brought in and vilified as ungodly. Not all baptists are good, not all Pentecostals are good, not all Congregationalists, Methodists, Lutherans Mennonites, or any that think they are better than any other are good but everyone appears to have this particular disdain for Presbyterians and I wonder why. Are you aware that it was the Presbyterians who had and instilled the "work ethic" that made the land of NA great? Just because a potion of a denomination turns against the Word do not lump the whole denomination as one.

I don't get this at all.......I don't get the point or the case......

"God says, 'I don’t care what you believe, how you worship, etc. Just be good.'

What, where is that Written????God most certainly cares what we believe in...

King James Bible
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.                                                                           John 14:1

Our Salvation by Gods Grace is given us by what we believe in,,,,,our Faith in the knowledge of Who Jesus IS.............

"As long as you love your neighbor you are being good"...................Where do they come up with this stuff? So as long as I love my neighbor I can rob a convenience store or cheat the IRS? Huh?

Uhh,I guess this is extreme liberal thinking                                                                        With love-in Christ,Kwik

Wow where do I start.  Where does it say anywhere in the Bible where God says I don't care what you believe, just be good?  Jesus said; "I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but through Me". And the Bible also says all our good works are as filthy rags in His sight so just being good is not going to cut it either.  I think you need to read the Bible read because I don't see anywhere it says all I just quoted in my Bible.  As Kwik says our salvation is all about Grace from God and nothing by what we do. So be assured He does care what we believe because our very soul depends on it.

Hey Kwik...   He is quoting what is at the heart of Liberal Christianity.   Liberal Christianity is all about being a good person and that God accepts you on that basis.   Liberal Christianity rejects Jesus as the only way to God.

This is very apparent today in the Emergent Church movement (Brian Mclaren, Rob Bell, etc.).

Matthew 15:9

And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

Hey Kwik...   He is quoting what is at the heart of Liberal Christianity....

I'm also quoting directly from the article, which apparently no one but you bothered to read.

Thank you for taking the time to actually read it before posting.

However, I'm seriously questioning whether I should post anything on forums where readers are so clueless about what quotation marks actually mean.

Well,Brother ,,,,,,,I did take the time to read the link you provided & that is what baffled me,,,,,,,,I didn't know much of anything about Liberal Christianity before you shared the article here...........so,if I may encourage you not to question whether or not to post things such as these on the forums,,,,by all means you should      However,I don't think it is good to assume that no one has read the article because it has rendered them clueless................I was commenting on what these folks(Liberals) said(fully understanding what quotation marks mean)and from what I could see,Rusty Angel was doing the same............are comments not welcome?

I also appreciate Shiloh explaining even further

Liberal Christianity rejects Jesus as the only way to God.                                                                                                         posted by Shiloh

As I said, before your sharing this ,I had no knowledge of their beliefs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,                    With love-in Christ,Kwik

Liberal christianity in general doesn't subscribe to the Bible, so it is a case of each man doing what is right in his own eyes and the blind leading the blind.

A "if it feels good it can't be wrong" theology, or a "my god would not have made hell" theology is a product of the same thinking. There is no personal accountability. It becomes a social gospel or a socialist theology.

Being good is defined by ambiguous ideas of "I'm as good as the next guy". They have completely left out love of God. And loving your neighbor may mean sex in someone's eyes. Without God's Word there is no black and white, and they are wondering about in a gray fog, going nowhere but down.

I didn't know much of anything about Liberal Christianity before you shared the article here...........

And that's a shame.  Theological liberalism began in earnest in the mid-nineteenth century.  It started in the German seminaries, took over the Western seminaries, and finally all of the mainline denominations.  The reaction to liberalism was Fundamentalism (which has now been thoroughly diluted also).

The basic tenets of theological liberalism are:

1. The Bible is not the Word of God, but the words of men, thtefore it has errors in it.

2. Jesus is not God, but merely a good person

3. All the miracles and everything supernatural in the Bible is mythical or allegorical (basically rubbish)

4. Men do not need to repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in order to be saved

5. All religions ultimately lead to God

6. Human goodness will lead to Heaven.

The sadder spectacle is that Fundamentalism became Evangelicalism, then Neo-Evangelicalsim, and is now close to theological liberalism through the Emergent Church movement.
