According to the commentary in the bible I am reading, he says the 7 seals happen during the great tribulation. Do you believe this? Why or why not?

He probably means THE SEVENTH SEAL, which is the one connected to the Great Tribulation.  The first five seals (already opened) should be viewed in the light of Matthew 24. The 6th and 7th seals are future.

None of the seals have been opened yet and will not be opened until we are in the tribulation period. No way have we experienced this yet.

The first four of the seven seals are known as the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The first seal introduces the Antichrist (Revelation 6:1-2). The second seal causes great warfare (Revelation 6:3-4). The third of the seven seals causes famine (Revelation 6:5-6). The fourth seal brings about plague, further famine, and further warfare (Revelation 6:7-8).

The fifth seal tells us of those who will be martyred for their faith in Christ during the end times (Revelation 6:9-11). God hears their cries for justice and will deliver it in His timing—in the form of the sixth seal, along with the trumpet and bowl judgments. When the sixth of the seven seals is broken, a devastating earthquake occurs, causing massive upheaval and terrible devastation—along with unusual astronomical phenomena (Revelation 6:12-14). Those who survive are right to cry out, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Revelation 6:16-17)

It is very very clear he is saying that none of the seven seals have been opened yet.

Then I am definitely reading this incorrectly.

Nowhere does the Scripture foretell "the Antichrist" -- and there are many antichrists -- will appear at the 1st Seal. That seal is associated with --

Matt. 24:5 “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

The word used for sword in the 2nd Seal is machaira, a large dagger or small sword; not a rhomphaia/saber/war sword, like Christ uses in Rev. 19:15. A machaira would fit the long knives ISIS currently uses to behead Christians and others.

Just something to think about...

One of the themes found in Revelation is the furniture or articles in the sanctuary.

As one enters the sanctuary the altar of burnt offering comes first, then the laver, the candle sticks, the table, then the altar of incense, then the veil and the inner part of the sanctuary where the ark of the testament or commandments of God is.

The sanctuary service in heaven began when Jesus went back to heaven, and it ends just before He returns.

The book of Revelation has the symbols/furniture/articles of the sanctuary carefully scattered throughout.

If you take a line from the outer courtyard and trace it to the inner most room where the law and the throne is, it also represents a time line, from 34 AD to the end, and the articles of the sanctuary are mentioned with the appropriate themes in Revelation, so that you can tell approximately what time a particular passage of Revelation is talking about.

This applies to the seven seals, as well, check it out.

These clues are consistent through out Revelation. See chapter 11 for example, it begins with the outer courtyard, and ends with the ark of the testament in heaven. The time also begins with the times of the gentiles and ends when that time is also over. The times of the gentiles began with the ministry of Paul, who was there when Steven was stoned, 3 1/2 years after Jesus was crucified, precisely when the 490 years of grace for Israel had finished, as predicted in Daniel.
