Rushdie recently and for the definitive story of Islam and Muhammad, he recommends reading Islam: In Light of History by Rafat Amari. The book has converted many a Muslim. Even if you know the truth of Muhammad this will make one even more informed.

Muslims will hate that portion of the book more than almost any other, because there is simply no answer for it. This book debunks Islam form an historical and cartographical perspective, get it and you'll be able to do likewise, too. There's nothing there, to the historical origins of Islam, Muhammad never counted on actual scholarship checking his work (how could he?), and this book is the organization of centuries worth of accumulated knowledge. Get it and you'll not only know what the Western world is more or less unwilling and/or disinterested to learn, but what the Middle Eastern world does not want you to know." Any books by Robert Spencer, Ibn Warraq, Nonie Darwish, Ali Sina or Serge Trifkowic. If you want a general overview of the history of Islamic conquest and Islam from its origins to current times and are new to the subject, I recommend: The Sword of the Prophet - Serge Trifkowic. Jihad in the West - Paul Fregosi (written before 9/11) Religion of peace? Why Christianity is and Islam isn't - Robert Spencer If you want to know more about Mohammed the man: Understanding Muhammad - Ali Sina If you want a female perspective: Cruel and usual punishment - Nonie Darwish A god who hates - Wafa Sultan If you want a more scholarly analysis: Virgins? What virgins? - Ibn Warraq If you want to understand how Muslims helped to assist Nazi Germany's Jewish holocaust: The Nazi connection to Islamic terrorism - Chuck Morse

It's based upon the Gharaniq incident. Something that Muslims know completely discredits their faith. http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Satanic_Verses_-_Gharaniq_Incident
