This customer came into the store. She says she has this new credit card that has a chip in it. Has anyone heard of that before. What is the chip for.

Its a security thing designed (hopefully) to reduce credit card fraud. You can read more here:

This wiki article is pretty technical, but the technology has been used in other countries for years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_card

chips are far safer, unlike the strip, its easier to copy the chip using cheap scan tools.

incidentally, theyre also the mark of the beast. Saw that on facebook.

Umm . . . by any chance did you mean easier to copy the (magnetic) strip using cheap scan tools?

The chip cards are more secure than the older kind, supposedly. I remember Fez mentioned them being used in his country because they cut down on fraud. Trick is that a new credit card reader is needed to use the chip equipped cards as intended . . . otherwise you're still using the old magnetic strip on the back. :)

the credit card companies are supporting a huge fraud because they do not pass that loss to it's customers  (us)...   we should have switched to this many years ago.

we have a credit card that has the chip. There is a different slot on the credit card machine (on the bottom) where you put the card in instead of swiping the card. However, not all machines are set up for it so you can still swip that card that has the chip.
