They are referring to the scapegoats sacrificed on Yom Kippur. While one is offered on the Mercy Seat, while the other is sent out to be killed. There's a book -- called Ante-Nicene Fathers -- it's several volumes that is a collection of Church Father writings. Another book is the history of the early church by Eusibus. There's very interesting insights in those books, while they are not canonical, they offer some different thoughts of the age they were living in.
