Did you know that even when you are not on facebook, you have already given them (if you have an account) permission to track the websites you go to? They know everything you do online.

If you have a computer or phone several people do that.

Google does it, yahoo does it, AT&T or what other service you have does it.  NSA can do it....   so be careful where you go.  It does make a difference if you log off when you are not using it.....  especially if you are doing banking.....   and especially if you are on your phone where it will track your gps.

Actually, I DID know this.  I don't worry much about it since I don't go anywhere online that i care if it's public.  Like the Ashley Madison thing?  Now that would worry me if I had ever gone on that site.  It's best to make sure to sign out of banking sites when you leave them and change your password at least once a month.

Facebook has been tracking users all over the web for quite some time. :)

Running a couple of browser extensions can help with sites that track you though. AdBlock & Ghostery work pretty well, and I don't consider myself paranoid, but I don't like being "stalked" online. I don't go anywhere that I'd be embarrassed if it was found in my history, but I don't feel like making it easy for 'em to follow me around either. If they want my data then they can pay me for it - or work harder for it, I really don't care which.

AdBlock kills ads as the name implies, and does it pretty well. Ghostery blocks trackers and other privacy invaders, but has the side effect of "breaking" some web pages. AdBlock can do that sometimes also, but its not that common. There is also another extension called Privacy Badger from the EFF that's pretty effective also. You can get more info on that one from the EFF site here: https://www.eff.org/privacybadger

I will definitely be checking those out, Walla.  I jumped onto the lYahoo homepage this morning and there were two ads for porn sites, with explicit photos, right there in the ads that constantly pop up on the right.  I have already contacted Yahoo about this but I'm ready to find a new home page.  The internet has always been a sleazy place but no one is going to jam the filth in my face like that.

I'm running ghostery and Weather Channel videos won't play.

I'm using Chrome, but the same should apply in FireFox.

Only thing I've found to fix that is to open the Ghostery window and go through a process of elimination turning on one item after another until the videos play. Then you are supposed to be able to export your settings, but I haven't played around with that yet. Its been an educational look at how web pages are put together and its more interesting than reading a book on it, I can say that. I have the same problem with YouTube and some other videos too. Another option is open a private browsing window making sure all extension are disabled (I still keep the Lastpass password manager available for auto logins.) One other thing I've tried is starting up another browser (Edge or IE in this case) that has no extensions installed and copy/paste a video link into that.

Privacy Badger takes a little longer to "learn" what's tracking you and what isn't, but I had some problems with it also. Many sites are getting more aggressive about ad-blockers breaking pages and all that, but I'm not going to tolerate having stuff shoved in my face I don't want - not on a system I paid my own money for, anyway. There's also the filth factor, as MG mentioned. It seems to be an "arms race" like everything else - the ad people get stupid, so ad-blockers get written, the ad folks get mad, and on it goes . . .

Wow.  63 . . . my highest so far was 40 something, and I don't even know what site that was.

I'd have to agree though. Everyone should run it.

Oh, on the videos not playing: I've started asking myself if its worth bothering with for some less important ones. Its been a great time saver!
