I realize the subject matter of my question will be much lighter fare than what is generally asked, but this was the only forum that seemed to lend itself to advice. Anyways, I have recently started dating a girl and for her birthday I am taking her to a performance of the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker. I have received many mixed reviews as to what to wear to such an event in modern times. It would always be my natural inclination to dress up for such an event (formal/semi-formal evening wear at least), but it seems that many people view dressing up for such an event in this day and time as snobbish or outdated. If it was a daytime production put on by a college or local theater, I might agree. However, this isn't a matinee and it is put on by a famous international stage company. What are y'all's thoughts?

Maybe this is just an idea but it sounds like you dress up.

I would think that you should discuss this with your girl friend so you can both dress the same..    It is only her that you really should be trying to please...

Just my thoughts on the subject.

I agree that you should try to line up how formal you will dress with how formal she will plan on dressing up.  That way, one of you doesn't make the other look under-dressed.  I would imagine that if the reviews are saying that there is no need to dress up the same way someone would have traditionally, then it would be appropriate to find a eclectic mix of formal and casual.  For example, you could wear a jacket with a less formal shirt and no tie, or just something unique.  Something that will be comfortable, but something that you still wouldn't wear to go watch some sports thing at a friends house in.  :)  Have fun.

If you contact the venue they wi!ll happily advise you . I always dress up , but I'm old . You will both love it and be surprised by so many nuances of the performance , have a great time and God bless you both.

A nice suite with all the trimmings, or even a tux would be just the thing.  And may I add, you have very good taste in birthday presents.  Well done.
