Many numbers have significance in Scripture as well as in the universe, and the number three has tremendous significance. The significance of three is that it denotes Divine completeness or fulness, substantiality, reality and solidity.

1. God Himself is three Divine Persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and God’s primary attributes are omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence.

2. There are also three Divine Witnesses in Heaven, and three Witnesses on earth, who testify regarding Christ and His finished work of redemption.

3. Christ was crucified at the third hour, there was intense darkness for three hours, and Christ rose again on the third day. He also prayed three times in Gethsemane, after which Peter denied Him thrice. Peter was also given three opportunities to confess his love, and three opportunities to accept Gentiles.

4. In connection with the Godhead, the word “fulness” occurs only three times, and Christ’s Divine offices are threefold – Prophet, Priest, and King.  As such He received three gifts from the magi -- gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

5. Man is in the image and likeness of God with spirit, soul, and body, with a heart, a mind, and a will. Man is accountable for thought, word, and deed, and also faces three kinds of temptations, with three kinds of enemies (the world, the flesh and the devil).

6. The universe is comprised of space, time, and motion, and time consists of past, present, and future.

7. Matter and energy are inter-convertible, and matter consists of electrons, protons, and neutrons, or mass, volume, and energy, or animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms.

8. The Holy of Holies was a perfect cube, consisting of length, breadth, and height, and the Heavenly Jerusalem is also a perfect cube, with length, breadth and height.

There are many other aspects of the significance of three (and multiples of three) which should be studied by students of Scripture and the universe.
