God created us as spiritual beings. However, to what extent do unbelievers have a spirit, if they even have one at all? Are they basically alive on the outside (flesh/body), but completely dead and empty on the inside (spirit)?

I believe everybody has a spirit.  It's just that believers have the Holy Spirit living inside of them.

Every living thing has a soul and spirit. The soul is that which feels and the spirit is that which knows. Animals have both feelings and knowledge although somewhat limited and on a much lower scale than that of man. Animals were not created in the likeness of God as men are. They are a lower type of life and they have souls and spirits in the sense of feelings, emotions, appetites, desires, passions, and a low form of knowledge, as can be seen in may Scriptures. If there are horses in Heaven as the Scriptures teach then there must be all kinds of animals there for Heaven is called a better place, and therefore it is sure to be as good as the Earth (Hebrews 11:10-16).

Scriptures teach that there is a difference between the natural spirit of man and the spirit of beasts (Eccl. 3:21); that there is a difference between "breath" and "spirit" (Job 34:15; Ps. 19:7; Luke 12:19; 1 Cor. 5:5;

2 Cor. 7:1) ; and that each creature has a separate spirit which is not a part of God (Num. 16:22; 27:17; Eccl. 3:21 ; Ezek. 21:7; Dan. 2:1-3; Mal. 2:15-16; Prov. 16:2; 1 Cor. 2:10-12; 14:32; Heb. 12:9, 23; 1 Thess. 5:23).

Eccl. 3:21 states this; "Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?"

I say yes but our spirits are dead, slain in trespasses and sin, when we are born again God breathes on us and brings our spirits back to life...our spirit is made one with the Lord.

Before that we were operating on soul life.

Humanity was made in God's image, which means we all have spirits or souls. That is the separating factor between us and animals; thought, emotion, sentience, a soul, a spirit. That's the image of God, as I understand it. So yes, all humans, unbelievers and believers, have souls. To be dead does not mean to not exist; they are dead spiritually, meaning they are in a state of separation from God. It does not mean their spirit does not exist. If God destroyed spirits, there would be no need for hell.

They have a spirit and a soul just as we do, and they need Jesus just as we did when we were unbelievers. They too just as we are, are eternal.

Gen 2:17
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
KJV

When Adam went from clay to Living being
Gen 2:7
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
KJV

That breath was of The Holy Spirit which placed Life into the dirt and Adam became living s/Spirit in fellowship with God in innocence... When Adam sinned The Holy Spirit left His place in Adam and man's spirit became separated = dead to the things of God except by creative witness and external communication through senses.
Love, Steven

And that makes their spirits alive, and capable of communicating with God and understanding spiritual things.  On the other hand, unbelievers have a spirit which is dead and needs to be quickened or made alive (Eph 2:1,5).

And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins; ...  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

We were obviously not dead, but we all were "dead in sins" until the New Birth. That relates to the deadness of the spirit, not the soul.

Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? Ecclesiastes 3:21

:sherlock:

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5:22-29

All God's created beings are in his spirit but most of them don't know it yet. Only those who he woke up ( born again ) will experience what it's going to be like for eternity.

Actually,we are born in Gods image...to be born again we experience when we fully understand what the gospel is all about.
