A strong earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, leaving several people dead and terrified residents huddled outside at night, surrounded by collapsed buildings.

At least four people died following the 6.2-magnitude earthquake, according to CNN affiliate RAI.
The earthquake hit 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southeast of Norcia at 3:36 a.m., the United States Geological Survey said. Its tremors rattled Rome about 100 miles away.
In one of the hardest-hit areas, buildings collapsed and left one mountainous town in ruins.
"The roads in and out of town are cut off. Half the town is gone," Sergio Pirozzi, mayor of Amatrice, told the affiliate.

We had a 5.6 here in Oklahoma a few years ago and it scared the daylights out of me....   House didn't fall down, but all our walls have/had cracks in them

I experienced a 5.6 here not too long after Mt. St Helens erupted. The house swayed. I was in the bathtub and the bathtub was moving. I told my husband that the bathtub was moving and he said " Okkkayy"

My sis in law was giving a medical exam 10 miles from the epicenter of a large quake in washington. Large as in 7-8. She struggled to keep herself intact and keep the patient from falling off the exam table. I prefer the earth remain stable under my feet.
