Social interaction may seem to have ceased ...

but while Im terribly shy in real life, and tend to keep pretty much to myself ...

I have friends from around the world. Some of whom Im quite close to. I would not have known them without the internet.

A lot of people who have issues regarding social activity do quite well on the computer.

Back in the '50's Los Angeles had an area called Pershing Square (a park) where people would gather and discuss openly anything from politics to religion sort of like a modern day Mars Hill. That was stopped and in it's place...a parking lot (maybe the inspiration for the Joni Mitchell song).

Fast forward to the '90's and it sadly seems that further isolation continues between people with all the 'goodies' offered by the internet.

A lot of people I see walking by are way to into their face in their cell phone to care about anything or anyone.

I don't think there is anything now that I I would miss...  I liked the 35 cents a gallon gasoline, but not the 60 dollar a week take home pay.  I have access to about three million books when we are on vacation.

We still meet for coffee each morning with several people and eat out with friends on Friday nights and after church.

Really there isn't much of anything I can't do now that I couldidn't so then that isn't due to age and handicaps.   I would really like to ride my old bike again....  but that has nothing to do with the internet....  but if I could I would have a lot more time than I used to for the internet saves me a lot of time for many things.  It would be sad not to read some of you guys and gals.

Oh yes, as I grew up on a property with horses in the middle of Queensland Australia in the early 1990's, so my time back then was spent outdoors with my dog and horse, riding all over the property. Today I feel like the Net has grabbed my attention almost as if it were an entity unto itself. I don't usually leave home without my mobile phone now either, which was unheard of back then.

I no longer have horses so my life changed because of that anyway, but it feels now that I had freedom back then that I wasn't even aware of, when now if people want to get ahold of me they ring my phone or find me online, so there's no where I can hide and get away from everything like I used to be able to do. Of course having the Net has its good points too, but if given the choice I think I'd like to go back to those days where taking time to be out in the bush and marveling at His beautiful Creation was my favourite pastime.

Yes you are spot on there - a freedom one took for granted.
