It was the spirit they displayed; that whatever they wanted to do, they would set their minds to doing. And starvation was not going to force them out: do you really think they would be able to build such a structure and not have supplies for food and water for them to continue working on it? These people were not idiots in that regard.

On another note: all the critics of God in the Old Testament claim He is cruel: confusing the people's language was a lot more gentle than starvation. And nowhere did it say that the Lord confused family member's languages, so it's not like the Lord split up families.

You are 100% correct

No, really it was not.

What do you say Jesus was referring to and why?

once again, rock and stones have no spirit, thus they have no spiritual side, they are merely rocks and stones.

Do you believe the Asherah poles mentioned in the Old Testament were merely trees with no spiritual side? If so, why did God hate them so much?

Unless you think they were capable of reaching God, then the building was not the problem....

That's only if you assume "reaching" is about height.

So, how else would they get to where God is at?  Do you think they could have gotten to where God resides using their tower?

God hated them because of what they were being used for.

The passage was directed to the Church at Pergamum, which is nowhere close to where the Temple of Zeus was.  Where Satan dwells is the earth, he is the Prince of this world after all.

Bingo - and would He feel any less about the entrance to Baal's temple?

I erred - it was an altar, not a temple. But even still, this altar is where Antipas was martyred.

12 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: 'The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword. 13 "'I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. (Rev. 2)

I disagree. Jesus' words to each church were specific to each congregation and the city they dwelt in. There is a reason He use the phrase "where Satan's throne is" for that city alone.
