One concern I had was the use of water. Water is becoming scarce.

Hi

I think that would depend on whether the Chemical bond of the water was broken in the process? maybe then some extra Hydrogen might be lost into space?? otherwise it should all retrogress back to its pure form and be recycled back into the environment?? Maybe??

God bless

It's straightforward enough to convert carbon dioxide and water into ethanol. It's no mystery. The only problem is that you need to put energy in, in order to do this - therefore it requires a source of energy to create the ethanol.

As with all renewable energy sources they require an existing source of energy to produce them whether it be wind power or solar power. Even biofuels (such as rapeseed oil) are a form of solar energy, if you think about it - because plants need sunlight to grow.

What the article tells you is that scientists have only developed a new catalyst that makes the conversion process quicker and with higher yields, what it doesn't tell you is that a source of energy is still required to drive the chemical reaction. Even the corresponding article linked to this does not make that clear.
