It would be more fruitful to start with the biblical Hebrew or Greek and work through the definitions up to the modern times.

That is wayyyy over thinking the issue. I am taking my opinion from the current Holy Bible.

Is there a way to do that online? I'm not a scholar.

i kind of wonder if respect was even a word in any language when the Bible was put together.

This link says it was from the 13th century, If I read it correctly.

http://www.dictionarycentral.com/definition/respect.html

Well, Scripture says "respect" so that is what it means.

Peepers, unless in your mind these folks are undeserving of your love for them them then I would say"Don't worry about it" cast that care on Jesus !!!!

I am concerned about it. I want to be obedient to God just like other Christian's want to be obedient to God. But it is a confusing topic.

I just googled it and I didn't see that particular world in any searches. Could you please show me where the word is printed in the Bible?

1 Peter 2:17 Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God, and respect the king.

I did show how simple it is,,,,you do not have to be a scholar,,,,,,,to use a Strongs Dictionary, download  eSword

http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html

It is a helpful tool without having to pull out & sort through out a bunch of books & texts

And -lol(I forgot something) it does NOT say "respect" and "yes" there is a difference with "respect" in the context it is used,,,the PROPER respect that some versions are referring to by using this word as their English translating choice is reverence that one has for God in His Word ,His Will & His Ways   in other words"Are they Godly people?" "Are they adhering to His Laws or their laws" etc,,,etc.....                 Hope that helps a bit,it does not mean to esteem a person over another person with a higher regard or value

Answer: The apostle Peter summarizes the Bible’s teaching on respect in his first Epistle: “Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king” (1 Peter 2:17).

Here's another example of why Got Questions cannot be fully trusted, and neither can the modern Bible versions. The KJV has the correct rendering of this verse, which has "honour" -- not "respect" -- as the correct translation:

Scrivener's Textus Receptus 1894
πάντας τιμήσατε. τὴν ἀδελφότητα ἀγαπᾶτε. τὸν Θεὸν φοβεῖσθε. τὸν βασιλέα τιμᾶτε.
King James Bible
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
Young's Literal Translation
to all give ye honour; the brotherhood love ye; God fear ye; the king honour ye.

Strong's Concordance
timaó: to fix the value, to price

Original Word: τιμάω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: timaó
Phonetic Spelling: (tim-ah'-o)
Short Definition: I value at a price, honor
Definition: (a) I value at a price, estimate, (b) I honor, reverence.

HELPS Word-studies

Cognate: 5091 timáō – properly, assign value(give honor), as it reflects the personal esteem (value, preciousness) attached to it by thebeholder. See 5092 (timē).
